About The Position

Brown University Athletics and Recreation is seeking candidates for the seasonal Lifeguard position. This position is responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center pool patrons (Brown students, faculty, staff, alumni, coaches, administrators, RISD students & faculty and general community members) by preventing and responding to emergencies.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • Current certification in American Red Cross Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR for the Professional Rescuer, or equivalent.
  • Successfully demonstrate all the following swim and rescue skills as part of the interview process: Swim Test; Brick Test; Legs Only Tread; Rescue Skills Scenarios; Spinal Injury Management; CPR/AED/First Aid Scenarios.
  • Ability to act swiftly in emergency situations using aquatic rescue equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge and application of lifeguarding skills and rescue techniques.
  • Ability to make quick decisions and take decisive action.
  • Assertiveness in enforcing facility rules and regulations.
  • Possess a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • Leadership and public relations skills.
  • Must be responsible, alert, dependable and on time for scheduled shift.
  • Demonstrate exemplary ethical conduct and conformance to NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Perform duties in compliance with all NCAA, Ivy League rules and regulations.
  • Report any rules violations.
  • Maintain current AED/CPR and First Aid certification (certification is available at no cost through the Division).
  • Successful completion of a background check satisfactory to Brown.

Responsibilities

  • Preventing and responding to emergencies.
  • Ensuring the safety and well-being of pool patrons.
  • Enforcing facility rules and regulations consistently in a professional and customer service-oriented manner.
  • Acting swiftly in emergency situations using aquatic rescue equipment.
  • Providing care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until Brown emergency services arrives.
  • Supporting a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • Conforming to NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Reporting any rules violations.
