About The Position

The Lifeguard ensures the safety of individuals at Bernalillo County pool facilities by monitoring swimming areas, enforcing rules, and responding to emergencies. The position supports aquatics programming, assists with water-quality maintenance, and helps promote clean and safe pool environments. Duties may vary depending on specific assignments and are not limited to those listed in the posting.

Requirements

Be currently enrolled in high school, have a high school diploma, or have a GED.
Be at least 15 years old.
Hold current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
Successfully complete New Mexico lifeguard and safety training.
Possess a valid New Mexico driver's license by the date of hire and maintain it while employed.
Successfully complete a post-offer employment medical examination and background investigation.

Responsibilities

Monitor swimming areas to prevent accidents and enforce safety rules.
Respond to pool-area emergencies, perform rescues, initiate emergency procedures, and administer first aid.
Assist with routine monitoring of pool water chemistry and adjust chemical levels to maintain safety standards.
Support the implementation and instruction of County-sponsored swim programs.
Inspect and clean pool facilities and assist with pool maintenance, including refilling and routine upkeep.
Officiate or assist with swim meets and aquatic events.
Develop and deliver aquatic programs, such as swim lessons and water-safety instruction, and maintain accurate records.
Handle sensitive or confidential information in accordance with County policies.
Complete assigned FEMA training and follow County safety guidelines.
Maintain required certifications during employment.
