Under the direction of the Aquatics Director and in accordance with Association policies, the Lifeguard should be able to motivate others in the areas of self-awareness and self-confidence through swimming and aquatics, be able to motivate and effectively communicate with members, parents and students, and exercise mature judgment and sound decision-making. The Lifeguard will create an environment that is welcoming, nurturing and genuine for all members and guests, develop rapport and maintain effective relationships with members, participants, and other staff, and work with other staff as part of a team. The Lifeguard is responsible for maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, on deck, and surrounding areas, preventing accidents by scanning assigned zone from bottom to top and covering zone in compliance with the 10/10 rule, and performing swim tests as required by association policy. They will enforce health and safety rules and maintain emergency readiness, respond to emergency situations in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures, and complete incident and accident reports as necessary. Additionally, the Lifeguard will perform routine maintenance of pool, locker rooms, and surrounding areas to ensure cleanliness, check pool and rescue equipment and promptly report any problems, and set up and put away equipment for recreational swims. Participation and satisfactory completion of in-service trainings is mandatory. The Lifeguard will uphold the core values of the YMCA when dealing with people within the YMCA facilities and within the community and work scheduled shifts. Arrangements for substitutes must be previously approved by the Aquatics Director.
