About The Position

The Lifeguard is responsible for supervising aquatic activities, preventing accidents, enforcing safety rules, and responding quickly and effectively to emergencies. As a Lifeguard, you'll play an important role in creating a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable aquatic environment for all pool participants. You'll gain valuable experience, develop leadership skills, and work as part of a supportive team. Lifeguard, CPR, and AED certification training may be provided by the YMCA.

Requirements

• Must be at least 16 years old and able to swim.
• Reliable, attentive, and able to remain focused for extended periods.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively with children, families, and adults.
• Ability to respond calmly and appropriately in emergency situations.
• Swim 500 yards continuously.
• Tread water for 2 minutes using legs only.
• Retrieve a submerged training victim from deep water.
• Perform active and passive victim rescues using a rescue tube.
• Perform backboard rescues.
• Lift and move objects weighing up to 40 pounds.
• Visually and audibly monitor pool participants for distress or assistance.

Nice To Haves

• Current lifeguard certification preferred; YMCA training may be available.
• CPR and First Aid certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Supervise pool activities and maintain constant awareness of participants.
• Enforce pool rules and YMCA water safety policies.
• Respond to emergencies and perform rescues, CPR, and first aid as needed.
• Follow emergency action plans and communicate effectively during incidents.
• Inspect pool areas, equipment, and water conditions for safety.
• Perform routine water testing, cleaning, and pool maintenance.
• Maintain accurate water quality and incident records.
• Help maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming aquatic environment.
