About The Position

The Lifeguard maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, on the deck, and in surrounding areas. The role creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. The Lifeguard reports to the Aquatics Director and works in the Aquatics department.

Requirements

At least 15 years of age.
CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen.
Current American Red Cross or YMCA Lifeguard certification, or equivalent.

Responsibilities

Maintain active surveillance of the pool area.
Know and review emergency procedures, respond immediately according to YMCA policies and procedures and the “safe-in-six” model, and complete related reports.
Maintain effective, positive relationships with members, participants, and staff.
Know, understand, and consistently apply safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
Maintain accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or State Health Department code.
Perform equipment checks and ensure appropriate equipment is available.
Check the pool for hazardous conditions upon arrival.
Perform chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and take appropriate action.
Attend all staff meetings and in-service training.
Assist other lifeguards with questions or concerns and provide additional training when needed.
Be willing to instruct lifeguarding classes under the Red Cross platform.
Be willing to instruct group and private swim lessons when necessary.
Perform other duties as assigned.
