About The Position

The YMCA of Greater Toronto is seeking passionate individuals to join their Aquatics team for multiple positions including Lifeguard, Swim Instructor, and Aquafit Instructor. These roles are crucial in maintaining a safe aquatic environment and delivering high-quality programs to the community. The positions involve teaching swim lessons using the YMCA curriculum, developing lesson plans, ensuring participant safety, and responding to emergencies. Lifeguards are responsible for maintaining a safe aquatic environment, enforcing pool rules, and ensuring equipment is in good repair. Aquafit Instructors will teach Aquafit classes, ensuring safety procedures are followed and maintaining order. All roles require a commitment to the YMCA's mission, vision, and values, with a focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

Requirements

  • Current certifications in the following Lifesaving Society awards: National Lifeguard (NL), Standard First Aid & CPR level C
  • Current YMCA or Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor certification
  • Previous experience instructing swim lessons an asset
  • Well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, staff and volunteers
  • Excellent written communication skill and Organizational skills
  • Commitment to working in a socially inclusive environment responding with sensitivity and personal awareness to the diverse needs of members including visible and non-visible dimensions of diversity
  • Flexibility regarding assigned hours of work, weekday afternoons, evenings and weekends
  • Current Certifications in the following Lifesaving Society awards: National Lifeguard (NL) Award, Standard First Aid & CPR level “C”
  • Previous experience in lifeguarding an asset
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and building a sense of belonging
  • Current certification in YMCA Aquafit (or equivalent – CALA, Water ART) OR willingness to complete certification

Responsibilities

  • Ensures all safety and life guarding procedures are adhered to, and in the event of an emergency respond as trained by the Association and the Lifesaving Society.
  • Delivers course content and examines participants following established YMCA criteria.
  • Develops and implements sequential weekly lesson plans.
  • Recognizes participant learning styles and delivers content accordingly.
  • Coaches and develops participants to meet success.
  • Communicates (verbal and written) child’s progress to parents and Team Leaders.
  • Maintains accurate, up to date weekly progress sheets and records for participants.
  • Takes attendance, ensures participants are signed into and out of the program.
  • Sets up and takes down recreational, program and other equipment as required – at the same time checking that equipment is safe and in good repair (reporting immediately all malfunctions and removing the damaged equipment immediately from circulation).
  • Ensures qualifications and certifications as required by the YMCA and regulatory standards are current at all times.
  • Actively participates in scheduled programs, meetings and special events.
  • In collaboration with individual program members, program volunteers and YMCA program staff, assists and encourages program members to access additional appropriate programs offered at this location.
  • Ensures that members, volunteers and other staff adhere to pool conduct guidelines and maintain order in his/her designated area as a proactive approach to ensuring safety and accident prevention.
  • Completes a safety check of lifesaving equipment prior to each shift.
  • Assists staff team in some cleaning duties related to pool and equipment.
  • Teach an Aquafit class to YMCA instructor standards, including teaching pre-choreographed Aquafit as required.
  • Perform other related duties to fulfill commitment to quality programs for all members as assigned from time to time by supervisor.
  • Demonstrates appropriate behaviours in line with our Mission, Vision and Values as reflected in our YMCA competencies; takes a member focused approach to increase their understanding of programs offered across the Association.
  • Represents the YMCA and the Association in a professional manner.
  • Understands the legal responsibilities and moral imperative to report suspected child abuse to Child Protection Services.
  • Understands the importance of the volunteer staff partnership and integrates the value of philanthropy and volunteerism in dealings with members, volunteers, donors and staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.
