About The Position

Under the supervision of the Aquatics & Safety Manager, Lifeguard Instructors are responsible for teaching swimming and water safety instructions at the swimming pool facility. Lifeguard Instructors may also be responsible for assisting and leading First Aid/CPR/AED certification courses along with American Red Cross Lifeguard classes.

Requirements

  • One year of related work experience in field required.
  • Must be a current and CSULB student enrolled in a minimum of 6 units.
  • Ability to perform and teach a wide variety of swimming skills; possess sufficient strength, agility, hearing, and vision to perform the duties of a lifeguard and instructor; thoroughly understand the procedures for reporting accidents and know procedures for when and how to call for help to handle stressful or sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, specifically the general public, staff employees and students; arrive for work on time; follow directions from supervisor; understand and follow work rules, safety procedures and personnel policies.
  • Currently holds minimum certification in one or more of the following entities: American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification, American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Instructor.
  • CPR/First Aid/AED certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
  • The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, swim, and bend.
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk for long periods of time.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include peripheral and close vision, the ability to see at 20 feet or more, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must meet physical requirements for a lifeguard; administer first aid or cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation in emergencies, and possess strong swimming abilities.

  • Recreation, Kinesiology, Education, and Health Services majors are preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform as a lifeguard by observing patrons on the deck and in the water to ensure safety and prevent accidents.
  • Reports and treats all patron and pool problems to the Aquatics & Safety Manager and in their absence, Building Management.
  • Follows procedures according to the USU/SRWC established Swimming Pool Guidelines and properly files and records safety violations to Aquatics & Safety Manager when applicable.
  • Provides First Aid, CPR pool rescue skills to patrons in pool and at the SRWC, when necessary.
  • Answers patrons’ questions, addresses concerns, and provides information.
  • Teaches swimming and water safety to all ages utilizing Red Cross Learn to Swim progression.
  • Teaches Lifeguarding skills and CPR/AED/First Aid to participants professionally and thoroughly.
  • Plans and organizes class lesson plans and adapts to teach to participants abilities.
  • Provide constructive feedback during and after lessons/courses to help improve students abilities.
  • In the event of an emergency, the Lifeguard must administer basic first aid for minor injuries and contact a parent or responsible adult for the injured person(s) if necessary. For any major injury, the Lifeguard will respond with the appropriate training skills and follow USU/SRWC guidelines for addressing medical emergencies.
  • Submit course records and record participants' progress appropriately and timely.
  • Attend all mandatory staff meetings and in-service trainings.
  • Other duties as assigned, reasonably within the scope of the job.
