About The Position

The Town of Smithfield is seeking qualified and responsible Beach Lifeguards to join our seasonal recreation team. Under the supervision of the Recreation Manager and Recreation Supervisor, lifeguards are responsible for monitoring, supervising, and controlling activity at town beaches to ensure public safety. Lifeguards enforce beach and waterfront rules, respond to water-related emergencies, administer first aid, and maintain the overall safety and cleanliness of the beach facility. This role plays a critical part in providing a safe, enjoyable environment for residents and visitors. Beach hours are 10:00 am - 6:00 pm, seven days a week from mid-June to Labor Day.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Must hold valid certifications in Lifeguard Training, First Aid, and CPR.
  • Must be certified as a Rhode Island State Non-Surf Lifeguard.
  • Must maintain all certifications throughout employment.
  • Ability to work 8-hour shifts and up to 40 hours per week.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other beach staff.
  • Ability to operate appropriate communication devices.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure safety of the waterfront and beach at all times.
  • Enforce beach and waterfront rules and regulations.
  • Set up and break down swimming areas, including placement and removal of equipment.
  • Maintain and care for all lifeguard equipment, ensuring it is in proper working condition.
  • Keep beach areas clean during scheduled shifts.
  • Notify the Recreation Manager of any serious problems or safety concerns.
  • Work collaboratively with the Recreation Supervisor and Smithfield Police Department as needed to support safe beach operations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
