About The Position

USAA is seeking a Life and Health Underwriting Intern to join their team. This internship offers the opportunity to gain real-life experience in underwriting, process improvement, and risk management within the insurance industry. Interns will work under direct supervision, adhering to risk and compliance procedures, and perform routine work assignments to support team members. The program encourages showcasing skills, building relationships, and delivering innovative solutions to business challenges. The internships are based at the USAA Corporate Headquarters in San Antonio, Texas, with potential for full-time roles in satellite locations for those offered full-time positions.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • Plan to graduate after the final day of the internship (Graduation date cannot be prior to August 13, 2027).
  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program or higher in fields such as Risk/Insurance, Data Analytics, Data Science, Industrial Engineering, AI/Computer Science, or Nursing.
  • Demonstrated interest in the insurance industry, specifically life and health underwriting.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to organize data and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with an emphasis on clarity and professionalism.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Proactive and eager to learn, with a keen interest in process improvement and innovation.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite individual life insurance applicants according to established guidelines for the issuance of Life policies, while meeting departmental time service standards.
  • Determine whether to accept, modify, or decline a risk through evaluation of an individual's medical history or physical condition, occupational hazards, financial background, insurable interest and other information pertinent to the decision.
  • Lead continuous process improvement efforts by staying current with emerging technologies and evaluating business processes to identify and implement improvements.
  • Manage and enhance business processes by planning and coordinating activities for moderately complex processes, from problem definition and requirements evaluation to design, testing, and implementation, ensuring alignment with the overall experience strategy and vision.
  • Develop and maintain operational effectiveness by proactively identifying opportunities to improve operational effectiveness through the implementation and monitoring of processes and performance standards, and partnering with the Policy Team to create new underwriting policies and procedures.
  • Align business deliverables with needs by applying foundational knowledge of the business to assist in aligning deliverable processes and capabilities with business needs.
  • Mitigate operational and compliance risks by identifying, owning, executing, and enhancing controls within assigned processes.
  • Monitor process performance by planning and coordinating the overall health of processes through the development of control limits and monitoring key performance indicators.
  • Support communication and reporting by assisting with the development of communication plans for customers and internal stakeholders, and creating reporting that clearly demonstrates process performance, identifies trends, and proposes recommendations for enhancements.
  • Facilitate application and process changes by supporting the execution of new and modified applications and processes to provide new or improved capabilities, products, or services, ensuring risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.
