About The Position

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is recruiting for a Licensing Inspector for the Central Region to provide regulatory support and oversight by evaluating applicants; conducting interviews, onsite and hybrid inspections, and virtual record reviews; recommending providers for approval to offer child care; and investigating health and safety complaints in child care settings. The Licensing Inspector would be expected to perform the following duties: Complete inspections and evaluations to determine the program’s compliance with laws and regulations, and prepares documentation within specified timeframes, per OCCHS guidelines. Conduct investigations of complaints, self-reported incidents, serious injury reports and allegations of illegal operations and non-compliance, utilizing appropriate information gathering techniques, to determine compliance in accordance with Code, regulations, and OCCHS policies and procedures. Update and maintains case records and electronic systems. Respond to all requests from providers or the public for technical assistance and consultation in a timely and professional manner. Attend a minimum of one in-person team meeting monthly as directed by your supervisor or OCCHS leadership. Perform all other duties as assigned by the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent for Early Childhood Care and Education, and Work with the director of the Office of Child Care Health and Safety to implement Department goals, activities, and programs.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of developmental, social, emotional, health/medical needs of children served in regulated programs.
  • Skill in working effectively within difficult and hostile situations to provide quick responses and resolve problems.
  • Ability to interpret and apply laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations, both orally and in writing, and work collaboratively and cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to operate basic office and mobile computer systems/programs.
  • Knowledge of evidence collection practices and analysis techniques.
  • Successful completion of fingerprint-based criminal history background check and a valid driver's license

Nice To Haves

  • Undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university with a major in human services, public administration, child development, or related practice field is preferred or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience is an additional qualification.
  • Experience preparing for or conducting facility licensing inspections
  • Education or equivalent experience as a program director in child care
