Licensing Engineer

WiLANOttawa, ON
$90,000 - $120,000Hybrid

About The Position

WiLAN is seeking a curious and motivated early-career engineer eager to grow in a unique and evolving field. This role is an ideal opportunity for someone who is excited to build expertise by working alongside experienced engineers and IP professionals. In this role, you’ll contribute to the development and licensing of WiLAN’s IP portfolios while gaining hands-on exposure to how technologies are evaluated, protected, and commercialized. You’ll develop a unique skill set at the intersection of engineering, law, and business, gaining a broader perspective on how innovation moves from concept to commercial impact. Why This Role is Different This is not a traditional engineering role. Rather than focusing on product development, you’ll analyze technologies—evaluating patents, studying commercial products, and supporting licensing and acquisition efforts—while building skills in technical analysis, research, and data-driven decision-making across a range of technologies.

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to wireless standards (e.g., 3GPP, Wi-Fi, LTE, 5G)
  • Experience with data analysis, scripting, or technical research
  • Familiarity with patents or intellectual property (not required)

Responsibilities

  • Conduct technical analysis of patents and portfolios to support licensing and acquisition activities
  • Evaluate patents for applicability to industry standards and commercial products
  • Assist with patent portfolio acquisitions through research, prior art searches, and due diligence
  • Support the preparation and maintenance of infringement analyses (e.g., claim charts)
  • Assist with reverse engineering and testing of commercial products and compile technical data
  • Provide technical support for licensing activities, including preparing materials and participating in meetings
  • Collect, analyze, and report on technical information in wireless and telecommunications domains
  • Maintain technical databases and documentation supporting IP analysis and portfolio management
  • Support the evaluation and implementation of tools that enhance IP analysis capabilities

Benefits

  • Mentorship from experienced professionals across engineering, patent, and licensing disciplines
  • Broad exposure to technologies and IP
  • A strong foundation in a specialized and highly valued area of the technology industry
