About The Position

BluePearl Pet Hospital is seeking a compassionate and skilled Oncology Veterinary Technician to join our Midtown, NY team! This role requires a self-motivated, quick-thinking individual who can multitask efficiently, with strong communication skills and compassion being essential. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of two years of experience in a specialty veterinary hospital and will be responsible for treating and monitoring patients, as well as supporting clinicians with patient care and client communication.

Responsibilities

  • Perform physical exam; accurately count heart, pulse rate, capillary refill time, mucous membranes, temperature, respiratory rate and effort.
  • Understand normal vital and lab parameters and alerts doctor when abnormal.
  • Perform phlebotomy.
  • Place peripheral intravenous catheter in cephalic vein.
  • Calculate basic medical math.
  • Set up appropriate materials for chemotherapy administration.
  • Safely dispense and administer oral chemotherapy agents.
  • Safely dispense, reconstitute and administer SC/IM chemotherapy agents.
  • Check chemotherapy agent calculations and dosages.
  • Properly shave and wrap for an IV catheter for chemotherapy infusion.
  • Have the knowledge of chemotherapy extravasation and what to do if it happens.
  • Admit Oncology patients and obtain thorough history including current medications and dosages, response to treatment and side effects, intensity and duration.
  • Discharge Oncology patients from the hospital, including basic client education such as how to handle patient eliminations after chemotherapy, how to handle oral chemotherapy at home, chemotherapy and radiation side effects and oral medication administration.
  • Maintain solid grasp of common veterinary medical terms and abbreviations and is able to converse with other veterinary professionals in medical terms.
  • Address client concerns and answer them appropriately during visits, updates, or after hospitalization. Quickly and competently facilitates incoming calls.
  • Have the knowledge of the tumor types.
  • Understand diagnostic work-up protocols (including oncology specific terminology for each tumor/cancer type per each hospital’s protocol.
  • Possess a working knowledge of anesthesia/monitoring equipment and assist with patients assigned ASA I or II classifications.
  • Remain current on R.E.C.O.V.E.R CPR guidelines and demonstrates proficiency in designated role as assigned by attending clinician and/or supervisor.
  • Maintain hospital for day to day function and operation (stocking, cleaning, etc.).
