Requirements

  • Associate degree from a two-year veterinary technology program with accreditation from the American Veterinary Medicine Association (AVMA)
  • Successful completion of the Veterinary Technician National Examination (administered by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) when required by the state).
  • Current Washington State Veterinary Technician License with credential in good standing required.
  • Ability to handle and maintain sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Knowledge of veterinary hospital practices and procedures.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills including managing multiple priorities.
  • Strong attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
  • Interact with a variety of clients and employees in a professional, caring, compassionate, and tactful manner.
  • Knowledge of the generic and brand names, common uses, and side effects of drugs utilized in a veterinary practice.
  • Knowledge of medical equipment and terminology.
  • Basic proficiency with a variety of computer programs including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Practice Management software (PIMS).
  • Basic written, verbal, and active listening communication skills with a customer oriented approach.
  • Basic analytical, critical thinking, judgement, and problem-solving skills.
  • Understanding of physiology and pharmacology to give appropriate patient care.
  • Ability to work in a changing environment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and calmly in stressful situations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide professional, efficient, quality medical care and exceptional service to clients while maintaining maximum productivity.
  • Provide updates to clients for hospitalized patients provided by the DVM.
  • Discharge hospitalized patients including possible demonstrations of insulin administration, esophagostomy tube feedings/maintenance, subcutaneous fluid administration, Freestyle Libre use.
  • Maintain accurate medical records and documentation for patients.
  • Restrain patients utilizing fear-free techniques.
  • Create and maintain patient medical records and documentation.
  • Obtain and prepare various samples including blood, urine, and fecal samples for diagnostic testing.
  • Perform laboratory tests on samples using in-house IDEXX laboratory machines.
  • Educate clients about pet health needs, nutrition, and preventative care.
  • Fill controlled and non-controlled prescription medications following Washington State laws.
  • Administer medications in various routes following the Five Rights of Medication Administration.
  • Place intravenous catheters and perform venipuncture.
  • Place urinary catheters in both male and female canines.
  • Perform CPR following RECOVER guidelines.
  • Perform advanced skills such as nasogastric tube, central line, nasal cannula and PICC line placement.
  • Administer and monitor all transfusions.
  • Perform ultrasound guided cystocentesis.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills in a fast-paced ICU environment.
  • Monitor critical patients in an ICU setting.
  • Perform accurate medical math calculations of CRIs, injections, and medications.
  • Ensure patient cleanliness.
  • Maintain and monitor patient chest tubes and surgical drains.
  • Maintain proper documentation using Cornerstone and Instinct.
  • Monitor hospitalized patients for changes in vitals or mentation, notifying the DVM immediately.
  • Enteral and parenteral medication administration.
  • Support a practice environment that promotes collaboration and teamwork and ensure the delivery of quality, compassionate, effective, and efficient health care to pets.
  • Comply with all practice policies, quality assurance guidelines, and standards of care.
  • Perform other duties or projects as requested.
