About The Position

This is a part-time position for a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at Indian Creek Correctional Center, offering flexible staffing for those seeking additional hours, averaging no more than 29 hours per week. LPNs are responsible for providing evidence-based nursing care under the direction of a Registered Nurse, including screening for sick call, administering medications, providing first aid and basic life support, and maintaining communication with security and treatment staff. The role involves recording pertinent information in medical records, interacting with other departments, and promoting continued competence in correctional nursing. Nurses must be able to work assigned hours, days, and locations, and be available for coverage as needed to meet institutional requirements. Assignments to other duties or locations may be necessary. This is a wage position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12-month period of May 1 – April 30, with the wage employment period resetting annually. Wage employees are limited to an average of 29 hours per week over the 12-month period and this position offers no state benefits.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Must possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Virginia Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) license issued by the board of nursing or a multi-state compact license (if you are a recent graduate of a nursing program in VA and not licensed, the NCLEX-PN exam must be scheduled at the time of application)
  • Working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of practical or general nursing care
  • Demonstrated ability to screen complaints of physical ailments and refer necessary cases to other medical professionals
  • Ability to maintain appropriate documentation, provide first aid, and carry out providers’ orders in applying treatments
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to administer practical nursing care
  • Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers with current certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required upon hire

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a Corrections or Law enforcement environment
  • Experience or related training in delivery of general nursing and emergency medical care

Responsibilities

  • Provide evidence-based nursing care utilizing the nursing process, principles, practices and techniques of general nursing care as determined by Standards of Practice under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
  • Screen for sick call, administer medications, and provide first aid and basic life support to patients and employees as needed.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with security and treatment staff while providing input and feedback to assist the facility provider in organizing a treatment plan.
  • Record all pertinent information into the medical record.
  • Interact with other departments as needed.
  • Promote continued competence through education/certification with a focus on correctional nursing.
  • Work hours, days and locations as assigned.
  • Be capable and available to provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs.
  • Accept assignments to other duties or locations as necessary to meet the clinical and administrative needs of the Department.
