About The Position

Stony Brook Medicine is hiring a T&R Center Licensed Practical Nurse for its Emergency Department. The nurse performs duties involving case finding, health teaching, health counseling, and supportive and restorative care under the direction of a Registered Nurse, licensed physician, or other licensed health care provider. The role includes observing patients for symptoms and reactions to treatment, treating physical maladies as directed and under close supervision, attending to patients’ personal needs, and performing general nursing and facility duties. This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). During the program, the position may be filled through a non-competitive appointment without an examination, provided candidates meet the title’s minimum qualifications. The posting describes temporary appointments during the program, with a potential transition to permanent non-competitive status and later conversion to competitive status under the stated program terms. The position is designated as OSHA Category 1 and may involve exposure to infectious disease, blood, body fluids, tissue, accidents, injuries, illness, and other unpleasant elements. The nurse may handle unpredictable emergency or crisis situations and may occasionally face irregular hours and pressure from multiple calls and inquiries. The role may require respiratory protection, which may prohibit facial hair, and may be designated essential during institutional emergencies. The role is an evening-shift, full-time position. Hospital positions may be subject to changes in pass days and shifts as necessary. Compensation is determined in part by verified, relevant comparable experience; supplemental pay such as location pay or shift differentials may apply to some positions. The employer offers comprehensive benefits, including generous leave, health insurance, and participation in the state pension system.
