About The Position

The Emergency Department Technician (ED Tech) provides direct patient care and clerical support in the Emergency Department under the direction of registered nurses and medical staff. This dual-role position combines the functions of a Nursing Assistant (NA-C) or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with the operational coordination responsibilities of a Health Unit Coordinator (HUC). The ED Tech performs patient care tasks, assists with procedures, conducts point-of-care diagnostics, and performs clerical functions in support of quality patient care and the nursing philosophy, goals, and objectives at Island Hospital. This is a full-time, 0.9 FTE day-shift position at Island Hospital in Anacortes, Washington. The role is onsite. Island Health is offering a $4,000 sign-on bonus for an experienced Emergency Department Technician.

Requirements

Completion of a Certified Nursing Assistant (NA-C) course of study or education at the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Basic level or higher.
Current NA-C certification or Washington State EMT certification, actively registered with the Washington State Department of Health.
Current Basic Life Support certification.
Ability to maintain a professional demeanor.
Ability to prioritize and reprioritize appropriately, perform multiple tasks, and adapt when priorities change.
Ability to adapt to stressful, high-volume, and high-acuity situations while maintaining an even temperament and calm demeanor.
Knowledge necessary to provide developmentally appropriate care.

Nice To Haves

One year of Emergency Department or ambulance experience is strongly preferred.
A comprehensive understanding of Emergency Department workflows.

Responsibilities

Transport patients to rooms or treatment areas by wheelchair, stretcher, or escort.
Obtain and document vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, respiration rate, temperature, and pain level.
Place appropriate patients on cardiac monitors and respond to call lights.
Assist patients with needs such as dressing, undressing, and toileting.
Assist licensed staff with procedures, including pelvic exams, chest tube placements, wound care, laceration repair, and closed reduction of limbs.
Change linens and tidy and clean patient rooms as needed.
Clean and stock equipment, supplies, and instruments, and maintain inventory in stocking rooms.
Perform point-of-care testing and chart results according to protocol.
Perform ECGs in a timely manner.
Assist with splinting, crutch adjustment, and visual acuity testing.
Assist with care for patients across the full spectrum of emergency conditions and perform post-mortem care respectfully.
Maintain working knowledge of helipad processes and safe patient-handling procedures.
Assist with arranging inpatient and outpatient examinations and services, including imaging, laboratory work, appointments, cardiac testing, sleep studies, echocardiograms, and consultations; coordinate with external partners as needed.
Obtain laboratory specimens within training and scope of practice.
Assist with accurate registration of Emergency Department patients in coordination with Patient Registration.
Answer calls, take or direct messages, relay urgent messages, return calls as needed, and answer physician pages when indicated.
Facilitate communication among physicians, nurses, patients, and staff, and respond to patient and family requests.
Use assigned communication devices and handle calls in a friendly and courteous manner, identifying the hospital, name, and position or title.
Enter written physician orders into the electronic medical record when necessary to expedite care; obtain test results, place them on patient charts as needed, and document appropriately in the EMR.
Assemble patient charts; obtain previous charts and medical records; check records for completeness, including consents, test results, transfer agreements, and signatures.
Copy charts as directed for patient transfers, verify discharge documentation against admission documentation, and check the return of valuables.
Distribute charts for discharged patients appropriately.
Transport specimens to the laboratory, direct patients and visitors, and pick up STAT items from Materials Management.
