About The Position

Mental Health Support Services (MHSS) is seeking dedicated and compassionate part-time Licensed Practical Nurses to provide professional nursing care and services to consumers in residential homes. This role offers the opportunity to build lasting relationships while practicing nursing skills.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Graduation from an accredited school of practical nursing
  • Two or more years of experience working with individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities preferred
  • Experience with an electronic health record preferred
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of practical nursing
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology
  • Ability to apply simple nursing techniques
  • Ability to record accurate information on patients' charts
  • Ability to follow verbal and written directions
  • Ability to follow established policies and procedures
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and related software and other standard office equipment
  • Ability to interact with a variety of people from different cultures and backgrounds and of varying ages
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers
  • Licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse by the Virginia Board of Nursing
  • Current valid driver's license and good driving record required
  • Records must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months, based on the Virginia DMV point system
  • Out-of-state driving records must be obtained by the applicant and presented at time of interview
  • Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date
  • Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check, and education/degree verification required

Nice To Haves

  • Two or more years of experience working with individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities
  • Experience with an electronic health record

Responsibilities

  • Takes, monitors, and records vital signs (e.g. temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiration rate)
  • Observes, records and reports symptoms, reactions and changes in patient condition
  • Performs triage
  • Assists physicians and registered nurses during patient examinations
  • Prepares and administers prescribed medications, treatments and therapies
  • Inventories, orders and stocks medications and medical supplies
  • Educates staff, families, and patients on routine care and prevention procedures
  • Maintains medical charts and records
  • Schedules patients' appointments
  • Transports individuals to medical appointments
  • Performs other work as required
