About The Position

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides nursing care through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The LPN directs and leads other assigned team members, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to provide age/developmentally appropriate care. This role provides patient-centered care addressing physical, emotional, cultural, religious, and environmental needs. The LPN conducts assessments, develops nursing diagnoses, identifies outcomes, plans and implements interventions, provides health teaching, and evaluates care. Ensures a therapeutic environment and participates in professional governance and development. Correctional-specific responsibilities include delivering nursing care to inmates/detainees while following correctional facility safety and security protocols, responding promptly to emergencies, managing care in various units, coordinating with correctional officers, maintaining control of sharps, medications, and clinical tools, ensuring proper boundaries and communication standards, and documenting care in accordance with correctional medical record requirements.

Requirements

Graduate from an accredited Practical Nurse program with six months of patient care experience required.
Licensed as an LPN within the state of South Carolina or a compact state.
A current CPR card is required; either an American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers card or an American Red Cross Professional Rescuer card.
Ability to demonstrate commitment to patient centered care philosophy as evidenced by effective communications skills, professional demeanor, and excellent interpersonal skills.
Ability and motivation to articulate and support departmental philosophy of excellent guest relations.
Must communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Must be computer literate.
Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification is required.

Nice To Haves

Bachelor of Nursing preferred.
RN staff hired after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree must be enrolled in a BSN program within two years and complete it within four years.

Responsibilities

Responds promptly to emergencies anywhere within the secure perimeter (medical emergencies, injuries, suicide attempts, etc.).
Manages care in intake/booking, general population, segregation, and medical observation units.
Coordinates with correctional officers for safe inmate movement and maintaining awareness of the security environment.
Maintains strict control and accountability of sharps, medications, and clinical tools.
Ensures proper boundaries, communication standards, and compliance with PREA expectations.
Documents care in accordance with correctional medical record requirements and chain-of-custody considerations when applicable.
