About The Position

Kako'o Services is seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to provide services at the Gastroenterology Clinic - Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, VA. The LPN will be responsible for initiating, performing, and completing assigned duties in providing care to variable patient populations. This role involves completing assigned patient care based on patients’ conditions, using judgment to select appropriate procedures and treatments, and accurately reporting and recording relevant patient information. The LPN will observe, identify, and respond to patient needs for care, including medication, equipment-assisted care, and patient/family education. They will prepare and administer prescribed medications and perform treatments according to established policies and procedures. Additionally, the LPN will recognize urgent or emergent patient care situations, seek assistance from the RN and/or MD/DO, and initiate appropriate emergency interventions as directed. Support duties for complex diagnostic tests and specialized practices or procedures are also part of the role, including patient preparation, assisting in examinations, handling specialized instruments, and monitoring the patient's condition. The LPN will also orient peers and ancillary personnel, integrate healthy work environment principles, assist the Registered Nurse in clinical education of new personnel, complete provided in-services, and assist health care providers with procedures and patient recovery in the Gastroenterology Clinic.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited community college, junior college, college, university or vocational nursing program approved by the appropriate State agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). As an alternative to the education requirements in the basic contract, the HCW may be a graduate of a State Board of Nursing approved LPN/LVN training program OR be a graduate of an accredited LPN program by Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) OR have completed an equivalent military training program.
  • Possess a minimum experience of one (1) year within the last two (2) years as an LPN working in a hospital, outpatient clinic, or acute care setting.
  • Current, full, active and unrestricted license as a practical or vocational nurse.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) & Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

Responsibilities

  • Initiate, perform and complete assigned duties in providing care to variable patient populations.
  • Complete assigned patient care based on the patients’ conditions, use judgment in selecting the appropriate order and sequence of procedures and treatments, and accurately recognize, report and record relevant patient information.
  • Observe, identify and respond to the patient’s needs for care, including medication, equipment-assisted care and patient/family education.
  • Prepare and administer prescribed medications (oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular and/or intravenous) and perform treatments according to established policies/procedures.
  • Recognize urgent or emergent patient care situations, seek assistance of the RN and/or MD/DO, and initiate appropriate emergency interventions as directed.
  • Perform support duties for complex diagnostic tests and/or specialized practices or procedures, which include preparing the patient, assisting in the diagnostic examination, preparing and handling specialized instruments or other specialized equipment, and monitoring the patient’s condition before, during, and following the procedure.
  • Orient peers and ancillary personnel to unit policies and procedures, skills, and standards of practice.
  • Integrate healthy work environment principles that result in improved patient healthcare delivery, education of patients and their families and employee satisfaction.
  • Assist the Registered Nurse in clinical education of new personnel.
  • Complete NMCP provided in-services in intravenous (IV) line placement, blood and blood administration prior to assignment to these tasks.
  • Assist health care providers with procedures and recovery of patients in the Gastroenterology Clinic.
