About The Position

This role involves providing nursing care for physician practice patients, updating patient medications, performing patient-related tasks, communicating clinical advice, and ensuring medical records are available. The position requires coordination with team members for exceptional patient service and proficiency with practice management software and EHR systems. The role is open to Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) or Certified Medical Assistants (CMAs) or Medical Assistants (MAs). The primary location will be Berkeley MOB with one day a week at Mount Pleasant, with potential to float to other locations for coverage. For LPNs, the role involves providing nursing care in an outpatient physician practice under the direction of a provider, staging patients, updating medication history, performing patient tasks, communicating advice, and ensuring medical records are ready for visits. For CMAs/MAs, the role involves providing direct and/or indirect patient care, contributing to patient assessments (vitals, etc.), documenting needs, participating in care planning, administering medications, and maintaining a safe environment. This may also include assisting with virtual health visits, managing EHR messages, and potentially performing front desk workflows. The role requires flexibility to travel to other facilities or adjust hours as needed.

Requirements

  • Currently licensed as an LPN in the state of South Carolina or hold a current compact/multi-state license as a Licensed Practical Nurse in a recognized NCSBN Compact State and is not a permanent resident of SC.
  • Must have a current American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Provider Card.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Active Medical Assisting certification from one of the following: Certified Medical Assistant (CMA); American Association of Medical Assisting Registered Medical Assistant (RMA); American Medical Technologists Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA); Nationally Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA); National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).
  • If incumbent is unable to obtain MA certification, an Assessment-Based Recognition in Order Entry (ABR-OE) is acceptable (not accepted in the state of South Carolina).
  • BLS Basic Life Support, American Heart Association (required at hire for Roper St Francis Healthcare locations; preferred at hire, required prior to independent patient care at BSMH).
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant post-secondary education program (preferred in all states except South Carolina).
  • In South Carolina (completion of one of the below is required): An accredited Medical assistant post-secondary education program, A Career and technical education health sciences program approved by the South Carolina Department of Education, A medical assisting program provided by a branch of the United States military, A Medical assisting United States Department of Labor approved Registered Apprenticeship program, A Training program that is delivered, in whole or in part, by a health care employer that aligns to a nationally accredited certification exam.
  • Successful completion of accredited Medical Assistant training program required for external applicants.

Nice To Haves

  • 1-2 years experience as a LPN and/or CMA is preferred.
  • 1-2 years of experience required if MA.
  • Completion of externship or clinical lab training (preferred).
  • 1 year of recent Medical Assisting experience (preferred).
  • Phlebotomy skills preferred.
  • Basic skill with computer keyboard, data entry functions and various software programs, e.g, Word and Internet applications.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently.

Responsibilities

  • Provide nursing care for physician practice patients following established standards and practices.
  • Apply knowledge of patient care tasks and techniques to provide nursing care.
  • Provide patient care in outpatient physician practice under the direction of the practicing MD, APP or RN.
  • Stage patients in preparation to see providers.
  • Update all patient medications in the medication history at each visit.
  • Perform patient related tasks as directed by practice providers.
  • Facilitate the timely communication of clinical advice to patients electronically or by phone as directed by practice providers.
  • Ensure all needed medical records are available to care team and providers prior to patient’s office visit.
  • Coordinate with other team members to provide exceptional patient service.
  • Maintain clinical and administrative skills per departmental competency guidelines.
  • Show patients to examination rooms and prepare them for the physician.
  • Travel to other facilities for providers or adjust hours to meet patient care needs as directed by the practice manager.
  • Maintain a safe and supportive environment by keeping the work area, exam rooms, and equipment in clean, orderly, and safe manner.
  • Ensure availability and proper functioning of supplies and equipment.
  • Assist patient and provider with virtual health visits.
  • Document in electronic medical records (EMR) accurately and appropriately.
  • Manage in basket messages in the electronic health record (EHR) under the Provider’s verbatim instructions.
  • May perform front desk workflows (i.e., My Chart requests, patient registration, scheduling, phone triage, cash handling, and check-in/check-out).
  • Follow up on orders, appointments, referrals, and follow up visits and collect co-pays as needed.
  • Order supplies appropriately, track referrals, labs and diagnostic tests, dispose of contaminated supplies.
  • Assist with other clinical and clerical duties to ensure optimization of patient experience within the practice.
