About The Position

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the Emergency Department (ED) provides direct patient care and operational support to facilitate the safe, efficient delivery of emergency medical services. Working under the direction of the Registered Nurse (RN) and the ED Physician, the LPN assists with patient care activities, performs technical and clinical support functions, and contributes to the overall workflow of the department. Responsibilities include assisting with patient assessments, obtaining and monitoring vital signs, administering prescribed medications and treatments within scope of practice, performing point-of-care testing, documenting patient care in the electronic medical record (EMR), and supporting patient intake and registration processes to ensure efficient patient flow. The LPN practices in accordance with hospital policies, nursing standards of practice, and all applicable state, federal, and regulatory requirements. This role supports quality care initiatives and participates in departmental and hospital-wide performance improvement activities to promote high-quality patient outcomes and operational effectiveness.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) program from an accredited institution.
  • Active, unrestricted Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license issued by the state of practice.
  • Exceptional ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, physicians, staff and the public.
  • Proven to remain calm and respond effectively in emergency situations.
  • Capacity to excel in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple responsibilities efficiently.
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and apply information in English for work procedures and professional communication.
  • Proficient spelling and legible handwriting required for accurate documentation.
  • Ability to engage professionally with a diverse range of personalities, including staff, patients and external individuals.
  • Must maintain a professional demeanor that positively represents the organization when addressing inquiries or interacting with colleagues, leadership, and the public.
  • Maintain current CPR.
  • Clerical skills including typing ability and knowledge of the EMR.

Responsibilities

  • Provides patient care support within the ED consistent with LPN scope of practice and under the direction of the RN or physician.
  • Assists with patient intake and registration activities, including entry of demographic and insurance information into the EMR in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
  • Obtains, monitors, and documents patient vital signs at triage, at regular intervals, and upon discharge, or more frequently as clinically indicated by nursing staff.
  • Assists with patient assessments by observing, reporting, and documenting patient signs, symptoms, and changes in condition to the RB or physician.
  • Administers medications and treatments as ordered and within the LPN scope of practice, following hospital policies and established standards of care.
  • Performs point-of-care testing and other technical procedures as assigned, ensuring accurate documentation and communication results.
  • Provides patient and family support and education within the scope of practice while promoting a compassionate and respectful care environment.
  • Documents all patient care activities accurately and in a timely manner within the EMR.
  • Supports ED operations by maintaining supplies, restocking equipment, and ensuring the availability of necessary forms and materials.
  • Maintains accurate departmental documentation and assists with clerical duties necessary to support patient care and departmental workflow.
  • Demonstrates effective communication and teamwork with patients, families, physicians, nurses, and other hospital personnel.
  • Maintains professionalism and composure while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced emergency care environment.
  • Understands and participates in the ED disaster preparedness plan and performs assigned responsibilities during emergency events.
  • Attends required departmental meetings, continuing education programs, and hospital in-services to maintain competency and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains professional appearance and conduct consistent with hospital standards and policies.
  • Recognizes personal limitations and seeks assistance from appropriate clinical staff when necessary to ensure patient safety.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and hospital policies.
  • Participates in departmental and hospital performance improvement initiatives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support ED and hospital operations.
  • Foster a professional, respectful, and confidential environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
