About The Position

Responsible for providing desk coverage and assistance to library internal and external customers, including circulation, program presentation, information, and computer assistance services. This role involves assisting and instructing customers in person, over the telephone, or by electronic mail, and guiding them in the use of library equipment and services such as reader’s advisory, basic reference searches, online catalog, MakerSpace, digital collections, public computers, printers, and other library machinery. The position also includes managing customer accounts, processing material check-ins and check-outs, collecting fees, and maintaining the organization and condition of library collections.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Two (2) years’ experience in library or related field, OR Any combination of related education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job.
  • Knowledge of applicable Federal and State laws and regulations, as well as City of Denton policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of development and activities that are organized, age appropriate and maintain interest.
  • Skill in moderate problem solving; identifying moderate-to-complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • Skill at the intermediate level, working with Microsoft Office 365, and other software systems to complete work.
  • Skill in interpersonal relationships, including using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Skill in providing exceptional service to internal and external customers.
  • Ability to work independently to manage multiple work tasks while balancing competing priorities with attention to detail and in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure and confidentiality.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in oral and written forms, for the needs of the audience.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing work environment to facilitate/accomplish needed activities.
  • Must pass a drug test, criminal history background check, and social security number verification.
  • Must pass a physical examination.

Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance and instruction to library customers in person, over the telephone, or by electronic mail.
  • Assist and instruct customers in use of library equipment and services, including reader’s advisory, basic reference searches, online catalog, MakerSpace, digital collections, public computers, printers, and other library machinery.
  • Complete registration for new library customers, update library accounts, check in returned materials, and check out library materials.
  • Collect fees and process payments for items, accepting cash, check, or card payments.
  • Organize and straighten materials on the shelves and maintain collections, ensuring items are in proper order according to the Dewey Decimal System.
  • Assist with preparation and promotion of programs, classes, and services; assist with program outreach.
  • Prepare publicity materials, displays, and bulletin boards.
  • Monitor the conditions of returned materials; repair materials and route to proper area and/or staff member.
  • Collect in-house statistics.
  • May supervise volunteers.
