About The Position

This position provides paraprofessional assistance in delivering services within the public library system. The Library Specialist may serve as a work team leader for a service point or branch and coordinate volunteers. Work may involve specialized tasks such as cataloging, public relations, children’s services, and providing educational and employment information. The role also supports patrons through reference and reader advisory services, programming, promotional materials, and mobile library services.

Requirements

Associate’s degree.
Over two years and up to and including four years of related experience.

Responsibilities

Serve as work team leader for a service point or branch and coordinate volunteers.
Perform specialized tasks such as cataloging, public relations, children’s services, and providing educational and employment information.
Perform copy cataloging requiring extensive editing and original cataloging; answer cataloging questions from Library Assistants in the unit.
Design and prepare library promotional publications, displays, and exhibits, and write press releases.
Plan and execute programs, including storytelling, using creative formats and techniques as appropriate; participate in system-wide programs.
Assist patrons in person and over the telephone with general reference and informational requests; assess patron needs through reference interviewing and provide appropriate resources.
Provide reader advisory assistance by drawing on knowledge of books, authors, and reader interests, including serving general and special populations as appropriate.
Recommend materials for addition or replacement.
Provide mobile library services to prisons, senior centers, rest homes, institutions, and homebound individuals.
Check out materials individually at each institution.
Perform related work as assigned.
