About The Position

This position involves planning, overseeing, and supervising a defined library program, project, system, or unit (e.g., ILL, circulation). The role requires participating in maintaining a safe, welcoming, and productive environment for staff and users, contributing positively to the work, and demonstrating strong collaboration skills. The specialist will utilize coaching and mentoring methods, train student assistants and library employees, and commit to organizational improvement by identifying opportunities for enhancement. Responsibilities include responding to building and security issues, providing comprehensive communication regarding non-routine matters, handling complex customer requests, and preparing individualized responses. The role also involves representing the campus at system-wide meetings, generating reports, developing complex queries, and conducting advanced searches of library resources. Maintaining and updating bibliographic and circulation records, receiving and inspecting materials, using library software and equipment, performing standard circulation duties, opening and closing the library, and maintaining library stacks are also key functions. Additionally, the position requires assisting patrons with search, retrieval, and use of library systems and equipment, and performing other reasonably related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.)
  • Assists with managing the Circulation Desk and scheduling employees; supervising employees; conducting staff meetings; hiring, scheduling, and coordinating training of student assistants in conjunction with Circulation supervisors
  • Public service experience
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work well in a team environment
  • Ability to prioritize tasks appropriately and complete work in a timely manner
  • Skills in organizing and managing electronic records and files
  • Capability to follow and write instructions and procedures accurately
  • Intermediate to advanced computer knowledge
  • Problem-solve and troubleshoot issues
  • Ability to work from diagrams and drawings
  • Ability to measure and calculate
  • Ability to create, configure, and use spreadsheets, collections allocation, and/or physical shelving space
  • May manage digitization for the department
  • May inventory collections
  • Compile department statistical reports
  • Write and edit detailed policies and procedures
  • Collaborate with Circulation supervisors daily to ensure smooth operation of the department
  • Use basic hand tools
  • Perform minor maintenance
  • Regularly lifts up to 50 lbs., reaches high and low shelving, walk or move as much as 1/2 mile at a time, and stands and shelves for extended periods of time
  • Experience working with alphanumeric sequences
