About The Position

The City of Farmington is seeking a Part-Time Library Processing Clerk for the Library Department. This position involves processing library materials to make them available to patrons, assisting with book sales, receiving and sorting mail, processing periodicals, repairing damaged materials, and potentially participating in inventory processes. The role requires accuracy, attention to detail, flexibility, and strong organizational skills. The clerk will work under the general direction of the Technical Services Coordinator and will learn and utilize the library's integrated library system (ILS) and other relevant software. This position also involves assisting patrons and fellow employees, maintaining confidentiality, and operating a motor vehicle as needed.

Requirements

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record for the past three years.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel, and the public.
  • Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel, and the public on all age levels and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to learn and use the library organization systems, including the Dewey Decimal Classification system.
  • Ability to learn how to operate the library's integrated library system (ILS) and various library-related software.
  • Ability to type and enter data accurately.
  • Working knowledge of basic personal computer operations, with applications such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and/or Google Docs, Google Sheets, Email, and the Internet.
  • Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to successfully perform routine duties as assigned with minimal supervision.
  • Must have the ability to organize, prioritize, complete assignments in a timely manner, and meet quality standards.
  • Must be able to work evenings and/or weekends for special library events.
  • This position requires a commitment to service excellence; the ability to work well with others in a team and independently; and the ability to remain flexible and positive in a time of continuing change.
  • Ability to learn to use the tools and equipment listed, including the library's online catalog and automation system and use them effectively to perform assigned duties.
  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.
  • Background check is required.

Responsibilities

  • Processing library material through the library's procedure system (e.g., applying book jackets, adhering barcodes, printing and applying spine labels).
  • Assisting in preparing library materials to be removed from the library's automated system.
  • Assisting in preparing books, media and periodicals for the book sale, which involves sorting and boxing library materials and lifting/moving heavy boxes.
  • Receiving incoming mail, freight, and donations; sorting and distributing them to appropriate staff and/or locations.
  • Processing periodicals and newspapers, logging them upon arrival, and arranging/filing them in display areas.
  • Repairing damaged library materials (e.g., repairing broken hinges, replacing media albums).
  • Participating and attending staff meetings, trainings, daily shows, programs, and other projects of the library as required and/or assigned.
  • Assisting patrons and fellow employees in a courteous and respectful manner, referring them to appropriate personnel.
  • Learning procedures and following established routines primarily through on-the-job, hands-on training with repetition and reinforcement.
  • May participate in inventory processes, which involves scanning barcodes of library materials and locating materials that should be in inventory.
  • Maintaining confidentiality and privacy of patron records and work-related issues.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors, and the public.
  • Operating a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City.
  • Complying with Technical Services department and library procedures and policies, and City guidelines, rules, regulations, procedures, and policies.
