About The Position

This position is for a Work Study recipient only. The Library Periodicals Student Assistant will work under the supervision of the Technical Services Coordinator to process new incoming periodicals and newspapers. Responsibilities include maintaining check-in data on a computer, performing processing, sorting, and handling of all newspapers, periodicals, and files, and assisting in the preparation of bindery. This role requires the ability to understand and follow job tasks, work independently, prioritize workload, and possess a working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database software. Accurate data entry, attention to detail, and good communication skills are essential. The ability to use a telephone and operate a hand truck for moving materials is also necessary. The work environment is typically quiet, and the role involves regular use of hands and arms for reaching, handling, and feeling, with occasional standing, walking, sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and requires specific vision abilities including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Requirements

  • Must be a regular, full-time student, enrolled in at least 12 hours per semester
  • Must have a completed FAFSA on file with Financial Aid for the current academic year
  • Ability to understand and follow through with job tasks as assigned.
  • Ability to work independently and to prioritize workload.
  • Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.
  • Ability to accurately enter data on a computer in order to check-in periodicals and maintain data.
  • Ability to understand filing procedures to maintain all files accurately.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail in order to ensure files, data, and materials are handled correctly.
  • Ability to retrieve, file, and reshelve materials in order to accurately maintain records.
  • Ability to relate easily to people in order to effectively communicate with faculty, staff and students.
  • Ability to use the telephone in order to answer the phone, record messages, and transfer calls.
  • Ability to accurately type in order to enter information correctly on labels.
  • Ability to operate a hand truck in order to move boxes/materials as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares all incoming periodicals and newspapers for processing into the online catalog.
  • Verifies date, volume, and issue information on periodicals and newspapers and enters information into the library’s online check-in system.
  • Shelves processed periodicals and newspapers in the current periodical section.
  • Prepares periodical boxes and types labels using an electronic label maker.
  • Enters information for boxed and bound periodicals into the library’s online cataloging system.
  • Maintains check-in information on periodical issues in order to claim issues that have not been received.
  • Retrieves, files, shelves materials as needed, searches for missing issues, and maintains the shelved periodicals and newspaper collections.
  • Prepares periodicals for bindery and checks in returned bindery items.
  • Flexible to perform other duties as needed.
