About The Position

The Library Page performs manual and clerical duties in the library to include being responsible for shelving books in either alphabetical or numerical order, replacing misplaced books, and performing other related tasks such as organizing and maintaining library collection materials to prepare the library for residents’ use. Library Pages carry out responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies, the Library Code of Ethics, and all applicable laws.

Requirements

  • Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age or older.
  • Must be enrolled in one of the last two years of high school or have graduated from high school.
  • Alphanumeric sequencing skills: the ability to quickly and accurately alphabetize, sort, and count.
  • Customer Service: Considerable understanding of principles and processes for providing great customer service.
  • Operating a computer keyboard, various library equipment, and/or office equipment.
  • Attention to detail
  • Basic Library Functions: must possess a basic understanding of the library's operations, purpose, and role in the community
  • Computer Basics: working knowledge of Microsoft Windows and general software knowledge (e.g., Microsoft Word, Internet, email)
  • Library-specific Software: working knowledge of integrated library system, including related websites and applications
  • Working with sensitivity and tact.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with library staff, library patrons, local government officials, and local community groups.
  • Learn and abide by Maricopa Library and Cultural Center policies and procedures.
  • Take direction from supervisor, correct mistakes, and learn.
  • Work in a stressful environment with patience, flexibility, and good humor.
  • Follow detailed written and oral instructions.
  • Effectively communicate orally and in writing (using electronic devices and handwritten) in English with other employees, and the community.
  • Work with standard office equipment including computers, printers, copiers, change machines, AV equipment and to be able to troubleshoot the equipment.
  • Work independently, organize and prioritize work, respond to varied and changing work demands, and make decisions as required
  • Work well as a member of the library team.
  • Direct the work of library staff and/or library volunteers as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality of library membership information.
  • Be comfortable working in close proximity with all age categories.

Responsibilities

  • Sorts, shelves, and files various library materials accurately according to library classification systems (alphabetic, numeric, alphanumeric).
  • Retrieve, check-in and reshelve material located on in-house carts
  • Reads shelves for accuracy, re-shelves misplaced items, and shifts materials for spacing.
  • Sorts incoming materials for holds, transfer, or Inter-Library Loan.
  • Maintains an attractive and functional public area, including straightening shelves, organizing play areas and picking up abandoned materials
  • Locates and retrieves library materials from public and non-public areas for library staff or library users.
  • Checks in library materials using the integrated library system, including contacting patrons if materials are missing components.
  • Ensures materials are still in circulatable condition, including replacing spine labels and barcodes and making repairs if needed and possible.
  • Answers in-person inquiries, helps library users locate needed materials, and refers users to other appropriate assistance including using the card catalog and self check-out.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.
