About The Position

The Library Media Specialist is responsible for providing all students with an enriched library environment containing a wide variety of materials that will invite intellectual growth and research. This role aids all students in acquiring the skills needed to take full advantage of media center resources. The position involves operating and supervising the assigned media center, assisting teachers in material selection, and making resources available to supplement the instructional program. The specialist will inform staff about new acquisitions, maintain an efficient cataloging system, and instruct users on its operation. Collaboration with teachers is key for planning assignments that utilize media center resources, and the specialist will help students develop independent research habits and skills in using reference materials. Research assistance using the internet and other technologies is also a core function. Additionally, the role includes arranging displays and exhibits, identifying student needs, cooperating with staff to address learning, health, and attitude problems, participating in faculty committees and student activities, and modeling non-discriminatory practices.

Requirements

  • Possession of a Virginia Professional License with an endorsement in Library Media (PreK-12) or ability to obtain one.
  • Master's degree in Library Science or a related field.
  • Experience in a school library setting is preferred.
  • Knowledge of library management systems and digital resources.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, teachers, and staff.

  • Experience with instructional technology integration.
  • Familiarity with curriculum development and assessment.

Responsibilities

  • Operates and supervises the media center to which assigned.
  • Assists teachers in the selection of books and other instructional materials.
  • Makes media center materials available to supplement the instructional program.
  • Informs teachers and other staff members concerning new materials the media center acquires.
  • Maintains a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all media center materials.
  • Instructs teachers and students on the use of the cataloging system.
  • Works with teachers in planning those assignments likely to lead to extended use of media center resources.
  • Helps students to develop habits of independent reference work and to develop skill in the use of reference materials in relation to planned assignments.
  • Helps teachers and students conduct research using the internet and other technological means.
  • Arranges frequently changing displays and exhibits likely to interest the students.
  • Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve learning, health and attitude problems.
  • Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
  • Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
