About The Position

The Library Media Specialist is responsible for managing and operating the Library Media Center (LMC) to support the school's curriculum and educational philosophy. This role involves budget administration, policy development, program planning, and ensuring the efficient organization and accessibility of educational media and technology. The specialist also acts as an instructional consultant, assisting teachers and students with information resources and research skills, and promotes the LMC's services to the school and community.

Requirements

  • Proper Kentucky certification
  • KDE Certification in School Librarianship Grades K-12, K-8, or 7-12
  • Physical, TB Risk Assessment, state/national criminal background check, CAN check and drug screen.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and administers the media center budget.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures for the operation of the LMC (i.e. selection, circulation, scheduling).
  • Plans and implements a technologically advanced facility and program.
  • Coordinates the school's implementation of KETS (if assigned as School Technology Coordinator).
  • Evaluates LMC programs, services, facilities, and materials to ensure optimum use.
  • Helps with selection, trains, and supervises classified personnel, student assistants, and adult volunteers to perform duties efficiently.
  • Helps evaluate the media center classified personnel.
  • Selects materials and technology which support the school's curriculum and educational philosophy.
  • Withdraws obsolete materials.
  • Classifies, catalogs, processes and organizes for circulation, the educational media and technology for easy access.
  • Establishes and follows procedures for maintenance and repair of all media.
  • Maintains a current inventory of holdings.
  • Maintains the LMC to be a functional, attractive and orderly environment which encourages maximum use.
  • Manages student behavior in a constructive manner.
  • Assists teachers and students in using information resources and incorporating information skills into classroom curriculum.
  • Promotes maximum use of the LMC by establishing policies and procedures of flexible access by staff and students.
  • Serves on committees involved with designing learning activities for students, curriculum revision and or textbook adoption.
  • Plans cooperatively with teachers to integrate research, information retrieval skills, and literature appreciation into the curriculum.
  • Provides professional staff development for staff.
  • Provides access to professional materials and information for school staff.
  • Adheres to established laws, policies, rules and regulations (including copyright laws).
  • Submits reports promptly.
  • Participates in various professional organizations and activities which relate to library media and technology (i.e. visits other LMC's; participates in continuing education courses, workshops and conferences; presents at professional meetings).
  • Promotes the Library Bill of Rights / Intellectual Freedom.
  • Utilizes current research and methods in areas of technology, teaching, learning and library and information science.
  • Promotes a positive relationship with students, staff and community.
  • Publicizes the LMC programs, services and materials through newsletters, announcements and in other creative ways.
  • Networks with other libraries and shares resources.
  • Submits to administration/SBDM and faculty statistical reports which support LMC goals.
  • Other duties as assigned by principal.
