About The Position

Provides effective library/media services for the instructional program, ensuring students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. Empowers students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information. Instills a love of learning in all students and ensures equitable access to information. Collaborates with classroom teachers and specialists to design and implement lessons and units of instruction, and assess student learning and instructional effectiveness. Provides leadership and expertise to ensure the school library program is aligned with the mission, goals, and objectives of the school and district, and is an integral component of the learning/instructional program.

Requirements

  • Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching License with an endorsement in the area of Library/Media Specialist.
  • Knowledge of acquisition, preparation, and utilization of both print and non-print media.
  • Demonstrates intermediate knowledge of educational technology and the use of Microsoft Office, Google Education Apps, Schoology, Nearpod, and other educational technology programs/applications.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of school management technology using PowerSchool.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of current technologies and their applications across all curricula, K-12.
  • Demonstrates the ability to provide computer, A/V equipment, and hardware setup/ troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrates interpersonal skills in working effectively with teachers, administrators, and students.
  • Communicates effectively orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrates efficient time management and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and experience in teaching, media programs, management, and administration of library/media services.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred a minimum of three (3) years of successful full-time classroom teaching experience.
  • Experience in educational technology and/or willing to pursue appropriate technology training as required by the position.

Responsibilities

  • Integrates the library media program into the curriculum.
  • Teaches information retrieval skills through group presentations and individual instruction.
  • Promotes reading and appreciation of different types of literature.
  • Trains students and faculty to use print and electronic resources, online services and emerging information technologies.
  • Models and utilizes a variety of instructional strategies.
  • Provides instruction in accessing, evaluating and communicating information.
  • Plans instructional activities cooperatively with teachers to enhance the curriculum and meet student information needs.
  • Participates in grade level, department, school, and district curriculum design and assessment projects.
  • Provides leadership in the assessment, evaluation, and implementation of information and instructional technologies.
  • Acts as liaison with public libraries and other outside resources.
  • Evaluates, purchases, and processes information products to support local instructional objectives.
  • Ensures equity of access to resources for all students.
  • Links local school and global resources to the school’s instructional program.
  • Provides accurate and efficient retrieval systems for gaining access to resources.
  • Collaborates with staff in locating new resources including professional materials.
  • Keeps staff and students aware of ethical use of materials.
  • Fosters a welcoming environment in the media center.
  • Plans and implements the library media program in accordance with the State of Virginia and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools standards.
  • Selects, purchases, manages, and maintains the library collection.
  • Supervises and schedules personnel assigned to the media center.
  • Coordinates, trains, and directs student and parent library volunteers.
  • Submits budget requests and seeks funds to support the library’s prioritized goals.
  • Maintains records and submits reports.
  • Promotes public relations for the library program.
  • Other duties as designated by the building administrator.
