About The Position

The City of Palo Alto Library is seeking dependable, service-oriented individuals to join their team as Library Clerks – Hourly. This role offers an excellent opportunity for individuals with library or customer-service experience to advance their careers by expanding responsibilities, gaining valuable front-desk experience, and contributing to a welcoming library environment. Multiple positions are available at the Downtown and Rinconada libraries, as well as in Support Services or Public Service. Public service positions may require weekend hours and evening hours based on operational needs.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 6 months experience working in a library

Responsibilities

  • Welcome customers and assist them with questions, accounts, fines, and library services.
  • Help customers use library computers and other technology.
  • Shelve and organize library materials.
  • Maintain accurate information in the library’s computer system.
  • Support daily branch operations and help maintain an organized, accessible, and welcoming environment.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to provide responsive and reliable public service.
  • Check in/out items; perform standard, holds, special handling and sorts; issue library cards.
  • Work at the Accounts Desk; handle customer accounts and fines; provide computer assistance; perform shelving.
  • Assist customers with library technology.
  • Maintain computer files for library materials; add, delete and update information.
  • Data entry of bibliographic data into the online library system.
  • Communicate with vendors to request approved items or to ask questions; refer further communications to the supervisor.
  • Accept and unpack deliveries and shipments of library materials; check for accuracy; return incorrect or damaged materials to vendors.
  • Receive and invoice materials into the library's computer system.
  • Perform RFID tagging.
  • Perform shelf reading.
  • Assist in the setup of programs; perform program cleanup.
  • Process LINK+ items and locate items listed on hold for the library branch or on reserve for LINK+.
  • Assist with special projects and programs.
  • Perform mail delivery.
  • Provide basic assistance to customers.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
