About The Position

The Library Clerk I is responsible for delivering excellent customer service while managing the overall flow of the library. This entry-level role supports core circulation and technology functions, including checking items in and out, patron interactions, assisting patrons with technology, and programming. The clerk serves as a first point of contact for patrons, helping them navigate library services and policies. Ideal candidates are detail-oriented, dependable, and enjoy working in a fast-paced, public-facing environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
  • Must pass criminal records check
  • Ability to lift and carry library materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to push and pull loaded book carts and bins.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, and reaching to access materials and assist patrons.
  • Manual dexterity to operate computers, office equipment, and handle library materials.
  • Visual acuity to read labels, screens, and printed materials.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person and via phone or digital platforms.
  • Tolerance for moderate noise levels and public interaction in a busy environment.

Responsibilities

  • Greet patrons and provide assistance with checkouts, renewals, returns, and account inquiries.
  • Explain library policies and procedures clearly and courteously.
  • Help patrons resolve issues related to overdue items, fines, and holds.
  • Operate the library’s integrated system to process check-ins, checkouts, and renewals.
  • Sort, organize, and prepare materials for shelving and delivery.
  • Maintain accurate records of patron transactions and item status.
  • Shelve returned items in correct order and location.
  • Monitor and report damaged, missing, or misfiled materials.
  • Assist with inventory checks and shelf-reading projects.
  • Register new patrons and update existing accounts.
  • Collect fines and fees, issue receipts, and maintain cash drawer accuracy.
  • Perform data entry, filing, and other clerical tasks as needed.
  • Assist patrons with self-check machines, printing stations, and other public equipment.
  • Troubleshoot basic issues and refer complex problems to appropriate staff.
  • Work closely with other staff to ensure smooth daily operations.
  • Participate in staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Assist with programming and outreach.
  • Assisting patrons with technology: computers, printing, copying, faxing, etc.
