About The Position

The Denver Public Library (DPL) is seeking a dedicated Branch Supervisor for the Ford Warren Branch to lead the library team in providing inclusive, high-quality service to a diverse community. This role involves overseeing daily operations, including budgeting, staff scheduling, and facility maintenance, while fostering a welcoming environment for patrons of all ages. The ideal candidate is a proactive leader capable of recruiting and coaching an equitable team, managing complex technology, and handling stressful situations with trauma-informed care. Responsibilities also include implementing creative programming, interpreting library policies, and ensuring the branch remains a safe, innovative space through effective problem-solving and community engagement. This position requires a flexible professional committed to organizational goals and capable of balancing multiple priorities, including some evening and weekend shifts.

Requirements

  • Experience in presenting and providing library services to customers of varying levels of knowledge and experience.
  • Knowledge of popular materials and resources for all ages and of current trends in library programming.
  • Skills in providing programming, reference, and advisory services to all ages.
  • Skill in providing strong, dedicated, inclusive, and compassionate leadership.
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent interpersonal and trauma-informed skills, positive attitude, cultural sensitivity, and sense of humor in working with customers of all ages and backgrounds, coworkers, and the community.
  • Ability to creatively problem-solve, negotiate, and positively handle stressful situations.
  • Ability to recruit, train, connect, motivate, and retain an equitably diverse team that is reflective of the community.
  • Ability to use extensive workplace and other technology, including email, internet, databases, eMedia, social media, and other software, with ability to work in a virtual environment.
  • Ability to handle multiple responsibilities, prioritize and set boundaries.
  • Ability to demonstrate innovation and flexibility.
  • Master’s Degree in Library Science.
  • Three (3) years of supervisory experience in a retail or public service operational setting, or three (3) years of professional library experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the library team in providing inclusive, high-quality service to a diverse community.
  • Oversee daily operations to include budgeting, staff scheduling, and facility maintenance.
  • Foster a welcoming environment for patrons of all ages.
  • Recruit and coach an equitable team.

  • Balance multiple priorities.
  • Work extended hours, including some nights and weekends.
  • Evaluate staff, set goals, and priorities to help staff reach a targeted outcome.
  • Support organizational goals to maintain morale, to coach staff, and implement progressive discipline if necessary.
  • Steward all branch activities through scheduling and assigning work to ensure branch service needs are met.
  • Keep track of the branch budget in alignment with library strategic objectives and values.
  • Calmly listen and respond to customers' complaints and emergency situations.
  • Interpret and communicate library policies to staff and customers.
  • Coordinate and implement emergency preparedness standards to ensure a welcoming environment for customers and staff at the branch location.
  • Oversee building and grounds maintenance to ensure a welcoming environment for customers and staff at the branch location.
  • Develop and maintain a welcoming environment for young people, including babies, toddlers, preschoolers, grade schoolers, and teens by building relationships, engaging teens in a positive, respectful, and consistent way, while maintaining a safe and inclusive environment for all.
