About The Position

Manages quality control throughout the plant starting at the Log scales through the Planer mill. Develops and implements quality programs including statistical process control (SPC). In addition, Supervisor works with Sawmill and Planer Mill personnel and procedures to ensure we are safely producing a quality product at budgeted levels. Analyzes and responds to customer complaints. Provides analysis to quality trends and develops and recommends improvements with procedures and processes. The salary range for this position is $75,525 -$125,875.00. The compensation range represents the low and high end of the bae compensation range for this position. Actual compensation will vary based on various factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The position is bonus eligible, with a target value of 10% of salary.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required with specialized training in wood technology or supervision preferred.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Intermediate proficiency in MS Office Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge and/or ability to grade lumber preferred.
  • Demonstrated presentation and communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Working knowledge of statistical theory/application (SPC) and be familiar with computer simulations.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and hold accountable employees as applicable (quality control (QC) techs)
  • Oversee performance of lumber graders to ensure compliance with Southern Pine Inspection Bureau (SPIB), American Lumber Standard Committee (ALSC), as applicable.
  • Oversee month end lumber inventory process and present results to mill management and corporate accounting.
  • Manage all aspects of the MSR quality programs.
  • Listen and promote mill personnel ideas and comments.
  • Organize and distribute information to the workforce for their understanding and use.
  • Train operators on performing job duties to ensure the highest quality product while maintaining production.
  • Communicate with sales and department heads that customer needs are met with a high quality product.
  • Interact with persons outside the company regarding product grade and quality.
  • Monitor optimization process throughout the mill for maximum recovery and quality utilizing SPC.
  • Maximize grade output.
  • Improve and maximize the quality of lumber and residuals according to customer specifications.
  • Gather log quality data and present findings to mill management and procurement.
  • Monitor kiln data and interact with Dry End Superintendent and kiln personnel to maximize quality and productivity through the kiln process.
  • Monitor machine-center optimization throughout the manufacturing process.
  • Conduct mill flow studies and computer simulation to determine product value.
  • Perform mill studies to justify capital projects.
  • Conduct simulations on all optimizers.
  • Provide mill management with the necessary information to make decisions regarding new products and product development.
  • Work with vendors to ensure new equipment performs to specs.
  • Maintain necessary and proper documentation
  • Hold employees accountable for safe work practices and behaviors, and actively promote safety.
  • Conduct regular safety meetings with applicable personnel (the saw filing department, graders, quality control technician, etc).
  • Ensure all environmental guidelines and permits are followed according to guidelines set forth by Potlatch and the Department of Environmental Quality
