About The Position

The authorized level of the position is Library Assistant III. Applications are being accepted down to the Library Assistant II in the event of recruiting difficulties. The salary range for Library Assistant II is $3,078.00 per month (SR-05), and for Library Assistant III is $3,201.00 per month (SR-07). This role involves a variety of tasks to support library operations, including shelving materials, maintaining vertical files, reading shelves for accuracy, shifting materials, preparing items for mailing, inspecting and cleaning films, assisting at the circulation desk with charging/discharging books and collecting fines, retrieving requested materials, checking in magazines, property stamping materials, labeling books, reinforcing and mending books, and potentially linking library materials to the database.

Requirements

  • Library Assistant II: 1/2 year General Experience, 1/2 year Total Experience.
  • Library Assistant III: 1 year General Experience, 1 year Total Experience.
  • General Experience: Clerical work experience demonstrating knowledge of spelling, arithmetic, ability to read, understand and follow oral and written instructions, and compare words and numbers quickly and accurately.
  • For Library Assistant III and above, general experience must also demonstrate knowledge of and ability to perform various clerical procedures, operate various kinds of office equipment, and deal with others tactfully and politely, or be comparable to Library Assistant II.
  • Specialized Experience: Progressively responsible library experience involving support activities such as circulation, stack maintenance, processing orders, posting periodicals, locating bibliographic information, and applying library terminology, practices, policies, and procedures.
  • For Library Technician V and above, experience must demonstrate knowledge of bibliographic description, catalog card elements, standard library tools, classification schemes, and types of publications.
  • For Library Assistant IV and Library Technician V, at least one year of experience must be comparable to the next lower level.
  • Technical/Paraprofessional Experience: Progressively responsible technical paraprofessional library work (e.g., copy cataloging, general reference, collection maintenance).
  • At least one year of required experience must be comparable to the next lower level.
  • Applicants must meet all requirements as of the application date.
  • Education and experience may not be gained concurrently unless specified.
  • Experience calculation is based on full-time, 40-hour workweeks; part-time experience is pro-rated.
  • Hours worked in excess of 40 hours/week are not credited.

Nice To Haves

  • For certain positions at the Library Technician V, VI and VII levels, supervisory aptitude may be required.
  • For the Library Technician V and above, experience must also demonstrate knowledge and understanding of various elements related to the organization of library materials, including elements of bibliographic description, catalog card elements and general format, standard library tools and reference sources (e.g. Library of Congress Subject Headings, Books in Print, Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature), classification scheme(s) (e.g. Dewey Decimal, Library of Congress), and/or the nature of various types of publications and materials.
  • Supervisory aptitude is required at the Library Technician VIII level.
  • Supervisory aptitude is the demonstration of aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory duties through successful completion of regular or special assignments which involve some supervisory responsibilities or aspects; by serving as a group or team leader or in similar work in which opportunities for demonstrating supervisory capabilities exist; by completion of training courses in supervision accompanied by application of supervisory skills in work assignments or by favorable appraisals by a supervisor indicating the possession of supervisory potential.

Responsibilities

  • Shelves books, magazines, and other materials by call numbers.
  • Files pamphlet material and special materials.
  • Reads shelves for misplaced books and corrects shelving.
  • Shifts materials on shelves as necessary.
  • Removes volumes in poor physical condition for review.
  • Packs and prepares materials for mailing.
  • Inspects and cleans all returned films.
  • Assists at the circulation desk with charging and discharging books, registering borrowers, and collecting fines.
  • Retrieves periodicals and other materials requested by patrons.
  • Checks in magazines by posting receipt of issues.
  • Property stamps materials.
  • Types and affixes spine labels on books.
  • Affixes colored tape and/or other labeling to books.
  • Inserts theft detection tape.
  • Puts plastic jackets on books.
  • Mends torn pages.
  • Reinforces spines.
  • Pastes pockets in books.
  • May perform routine linking of library materials to records in the database.
