About The Position

Austin Community College is seeking a Library Assistant (Hourly) to report to the Head Librarian. This role is responsible for performing circulation desk computer operations and assisting patrons with directional information. The position involves working at the circulation desk, checking materials in and out, answering phones, and making phone contact with other Library Services departments. Responsibilities include collecting money and giving receipts for fines, releasing student records on hold, opening and/or closing the library, keeping statistics, monitoring the security system, maintaining library equipment, and handling mail when appropriate. The role also involves performing office duties such as word processing, data entry, maintaining files, processing mail, and duplication. The Library Assistant will gather, compile, and enter data, producing routine reports and documents, and create various informational materials. They will also operate office equipment like copiers and fax machines. Specific duties include circulation desk tasks such as checking materials in/out, collecting fines, updating patron records, answering the phone, and removing student holds. Collection and stack maintenance duties, including shelving, shelf reading, and light cleaning, are also part of the role. The position supports Librarians and other Library Assistants, completes word processing and data entry, and assists with other duties and special projects as assigned.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Library of Congress Classification System.
  • Experience with online circulation systems such as SirsiDynix.
  • Library customer service experience.
  • Use a variety of spreadsheet, word processing, database, and presentation software.
  • May also use social media, work with desktop publishing, and update webpages.
  • Related work experience in a Library or Bookstore.

Responsibilities

  • Perform circulation desk computer operations and assist patrons with directional information.

  • Respond to and/or direct inquiries in person or on the telephone.
  • Input budget figures, prepare requisitions, log and track expenditures, take payments, or issue invoices or bills.
  • Maintain tracking systems and logs.
  • Operate office equipment such as copiers and fax machines.
  • Perform circulation desk duties: including checking materials in/out, collecting fines, updating patron records, answering the phone, and removing student holds.
  • Perform collection and stack maintenance duties: including shelving of materials, shelf reading, light cleaning, and other assigned tasks.
  • Provide support for Librarians and Library Assistants.
  • Complete word processing and data entry tasks.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Complete other duties, and special projects, as assigned.
