About The Position

Austin Community College is seeking a Library Assistant (Hourly) to report to the Head Librarian. This role is responsible for performing circulation desk computer operations and assisting patrons with directional information. The position involves working at the circulation desk, checking materials in and out, answering phones, and coordinating with other Library Services departments. Responsibilities include handling fines, releasing student records on hold, opening and closing the library, maintaining statistics, monitoring security systems, maintaining library equipment, and managing mail. The role also involves performing various office duties such as word processing, data entry, filing, mail processing, and duplication. The Library Assistant will also gather, compile, and enter data, produce routine reports, and create various documents like handouts and newsletters. They will respond to inquiries in person and over the phone, and may assist with budget figures, requisitions, payment processing, and tracking expenditures. The position requires maintaining tracking systems and logs, and operating office equipment like copiers and fax machines. Additionally, the role includes collection and stack maintenance duties such as shelving materials, shelf reading, light cleaning, and supporting Librarians and other Library Assistants. Other duties and special projects as assigned.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Library of Congress Classification System.
  • Experience with online circulation systems such as SirsiDynix.
  • Library customer service experience.
  • Use of a variety of spreadsheet, word processing, database, and presentation software.
  • Use of automated library systems within a web-based environment.
  • Related work experience in a library or bookstore.

Responsibilities

  • Perform circulation desk computer operations and assist patrons with directional information.
  • Work at the circulation desk; check materials in and out.
  • Answer the phone and make phone contact with other Library Services departments regarding circulation desk functions.
  • Collect money and give receipts for fines; release student records which have been placed on hold.
  • Open and/or close library; keep statistics.
  • Monitor security system, maintain library equipment, and pick up, sort and deliver mail when appropriate.
  • Perform office duties including word processing, data entry, maintaining files, processing mail, and duplication.
  • Gather, compile, and enter data, producing routine reports and documents.
  • Produce handouts, fliers, newsletters, brochures, manuals, and other documents.
  • Respond to and/or direct inquiries in person or on the telephone.
  • Input budget figures, prepare requisitions, log and track expenditures, take payments, or issue invoices or bills.
  • Maintain tracking systems and logs.
  • Operate office equipment such as copiers and fax machines.
  • Perform circulation desk duties: checking materials in/out, collecting fines, updating patron records, answering the phone, and removing student holds.
  • Perform collection and stack maintenance duties: shelving of materials, shelf reading, light cleaning, and other assigned tasks.
  • Provide support for Librarians and Library Assistants.
  • Complete word processing and data entry tasks.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Complete other duties, and special projects, as assigned.
