About The Position

The City of Happy Valley is seeking several on-call Library Assistants to join their team. In this role, you will provide a high level of customer service to the public via phone and in person at the front desk, assisting patrons with library materials. The ideal candidate will possess strong customer service skills and experience working in busy environments, with the ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse community of patrons and staff. While library experience is preferred, it is not a mandatory requirement. This is an on-call position with no guaranteed hours, but may require 4-20 hours per week as needed. Shifts can include evenings and weekends, with hours ranging from 9:35 am to 6:05 pm. This position is not eligible for benefits but does include sick leave in accordance with Oregon law. The Happy Valley Library, part of the LINCC network, serves over 15,000 visitors monthly and circulates more than 600,000 items annually. We are looking for service-oriented individuals familiar with fast-paced library settings. Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Previous experience with library systems and environment.
  • One year experience operating computers and providing customer service.
  • Successfully pass pre-employment self-administered alpha-numeric exam.
  • Requires Microsoft Office proficiency.
  • Ability to accurately file alphabetical and numerical information.
  • Effectively communicate accurate information both orally and in writing.
  • Interact tactfully and effectively with the public and staff members.
  • Make decisions based on regulations and established policies and procedures.
  • Work independently, quickly, and accurately with close attention to detail in an atmosphere of frequent interruptions and changing priorities.
  • Operate a computer and word processing software and other standard office equipment.
  • Manage multiple and rapidly changing priorities.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively orally and in writing.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Comprehend and use English effectively including producing all forms of communication in a clear, concise, and understandable manner to intended audiences.
  • Provide equitable and inclusive services to diverse populations.

Nice To Haves

  • Library experience, while preferred, is not required.
  • Service minded individuals who are familiar with a fast-paced library environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assists patrons with the use of library materials and services and in their selection of materials.
  • Explains use of on-line catalog and the library classification system.
  • Checks books in and out for borrowing purposes, accepts and collects fines, processes new library accounts, answers basic reference questions.
  • Assists in processing of new books, periodicals, and other printed materials.
  • Shelves books and assists in the implementation of circulation procedures; provides suggestion for material selection; maintains on-line system data, files and other clerical records related to the library.
  • Conducts bibliographic searches for interlibrary loan request, processes items to be picked up by courier; mends damaged materials; assists in keeping the library facilities clean and orderly.
  • Assists other library staff with special library programs and services.
  • Assist and support the City to identify and provide services to all members of the community and remove barriers to those services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
