About The Position

Under the supervision of the Branch Manager, this role assists customers with library card registration, using the self-check system, and resolving account-related issues. It provides prompt and friendly customer service by answering questions, solving problems, and supporting patrons with various tasks related to the use of library materials. The position collaborates with the circulation team to efficiently manage the flow of library items.

Requirements

  • One (1) year of public contact and/or customer service experience.
  • Familiarity with basic library procedures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computers.
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Ability to push or transport a loaded cart weighing up to 150 pounds.
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends.
  • Must maintain regular reliable attendance.
  • Ability to interact with patrons and staff in a tactful, respectful, and professional manner at all times.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative while adhering to departmental policies and established procedures.
  • Ability to learn and effectively utilizes computerized circulation and catalog systems.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with library patrons and staff in a friendly, efficient, and service-oriented manner.
  • Ability to learn, perform, and adapt to routine library functions and procedures with speed and accuracy.
  • Ability to learn and properly apply established money-handling and collection procedures.
  • Ability to communicate library policies, procedures, and information clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous clerical or library clerical experience in a public library preferred.
  • An associate’s degree is preferred.
  • A valid Texas driver's license, the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment, or a military waiver is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serves at the circulation desk checking in and out library materials, registering patrons, collecting overdue fines, and assisting patrons with directional and “ready reference” information.
  • Accurately enters and updates patron and library material information in the library database.
  • Shelves materials, reads shelves, and creates displays to assist in maintaining a neat and orderly library collection.
  • Provides Readers Advisory service to library patrons and staff.
  • Assists the public in the use of the library’s online catalog and digital resources.
  • Provides hands-on assistance to patrons with computer use, printing, and photocopying.
  • Maintains, organizes, and cleans the audiovisual collection.
  • Assists with holds, claims returned and missing items on a routine basis, clearing materials as necessary.
  • Assists with interlibrary loan tasks.
  • Perform other job-related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
