About The Position

This position is for a Student Employee (non-exempt) at St. Olaf College, specifically within the St. Olaf Libraries Acquisitions & Resource Management unit. The purpose of this role is to assist library staff with routine, daily library operations and to help manage the St. Olaf Library’s catalogue of resources. The role involves supporting library work by managing library resources, ensuring their visibility and relevance to campus teaching, and assisting with the intake of new materials. The student worker will also assist patrons as needed, learn the Library of Congress Numbering System, and escalate complex issues to library staff. This position offers opportunities to develop transferable skills such as organization, attention to detail, time-management, creative thinking, independent work, and adaptability.

Requirements

  • Physical ability to stand for up to 1 hour; bend, lift up to 40 pounds, unpack and shelve books, push a loaded book cart, and to read book labels with small font.
  • Basic computer skills; knowledge of spreadsheets a plus.
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
  • Must demonstrate good communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Crouching, stooping, twisting/pivoting, reaching overhead, grasping/handling, pushing/pulling, and lifting and carrying objects up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to safely perform the physical work required of all duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

Responsibilities

  • Support library work by managing library resources, ensuring visibility, relevance to teaching on campus, and assisting with intake of new materials.
  • Working independently throughout the library to complete projects as assigned.
  • Assist patrons as needed.

  • Responsible for escalating more complex issues to library staff for resolution.
  • Assist Library staff with a variety of projects as assigned.
