About The Position

Under the general direction of the Library Services Manager, the Librarian I provides comprehensive public library services by assisting patrons, coordinating programs and outreach, managing collections and volunteers, supporting library operations and technology, and collaborating with staff and community partners to advance the library’s mission and strategic goals.

Requirements

  • Master's degree required in library science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association. Degree may be a Master of Library Science, Master of Library and Information Science, or a Master of Arts (or Science) in Library Science, usually designated as MLS or MA in LS.
  • Customer service experience required.
  • Must possess a valid class "C" Driver's License.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen, criminal background check and MVR check.

Nice To Haves

  • Two (2) years of professional librarian experience preferred.
  • Experience planning and delivering educational or recreational programs strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the development and improvement of policies, procedures, workflows, and organizational goals and objectives.
  • Prepare written and verbal reports evaluating library collections, services, and operations, and conduct ongoing review and revision of library policies and procedures.
  • Maintain knowledge of standard library principles and ethical practices, including intellectual freedom, copyright, collection development, patron confidentiality, censorship, and Internet safety.
  • Perform a variety of routine tasks related to the acquisition or cataloging of library materials; process and maintain library materials; and provide assistance to patrons.
  • Provide reference services utilizing a wide variety of reference tools, including automated databases and other library technologies; and assist patrons in the use of facilities and services.
  • Evaluate library materials, recommend purchase of new materials; analyze procedures used to collect new library materials; and recommend modifications to improve library collection.
  • Maintain and develop assigned library collection; remove outdated and unused materials; catalog and classify books; verify catalog cards, labels, and pockets; and affix identification labels to materials.
  • Assist with circulation of library materials by processing loans and returns, sorting and shelving items, locating and retrieving requested materials, and managing patron accounts with accuracy and confidentiality as needed.
  • Conduct bibliographic searches; match bibliographic records to existing titles; copy catalog; and edit bibliographic records to verify accurate information.
  • Actively monitor and stay informed of emerging public library trends, best practices, and innovations at the local, state, and national levels to support responsive and forward-thinking library services; attend professional conferences, meetings, and workshops as required.
  • Manage the library’s overall volunteer program, including schoolyear and summer volunteers, by coordinating recruitment, scheduling, and training in collaboration with the Program Coordinators and Human Resources.
  • Coordinate the planning, promotion, implementation, and evaluation of library programs for all ages, collaborating with the library team to deliver summer, family, youth, general library, and outreach programs aligned with community needs and interests.
  • Provide support at City sponsored events as needed, including those occurring outside of regular business hours.
  • Respond to patron requests for library materials, services and information; and assist patrons in completing requests for material not available in the local collection.
  • Participate in the promotion of library services and resources; assist in giving library tours to groups; and assist in the preparation of informational handouts for public distribution, including calendars and flyers.
  • Collect statistical data and submit reports, as needed; and provide backup clerical support.
  • Adhere to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and City attendance policies and procedures; ensure all behaviors comply with the City’s Personnel Manual.
  • May supervise clerical employees and/or volunteers in the performance of their duties.
  • Collaborate with the library team to promote programs and services by creating and distributing print and digital content, managing social media, designing displays, and identifying additional promotional opportunities; serve as a liaison for the City Communications Team.
  • Build and maintain program-based partnerships with community organizations, schools, and local stakeholders, serve as the primary community liaison by coordinating collaborative outreach that expands access to and awareness of library programs, services, and events.
  • Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
