About The Position

The French Institute is seeking a Librarian Archivist to support the mission of the University. This role involves performing original and copy cataloging for the Institute's growing collection of monographs, serials, and media. The position also includes organizing and creating finding aids for its expanding archival collections, collaborating on digitization projects, and making finding aids and other materials digitally accessible via the French Institute website. The Librarian Archivist will interact with students, faculty, staff, outside researchers, and the public.

Requirements

  • Master’s of Library Science from an ALA-accredited library school.
  • Cataloging/metadata experience, preferably in an academic library setting.
  • Experience evaluating electronic resources, preferably in an academic library setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of standards and principles for managing special collections and archives.
  • Ability to describe special collections materials, archives, and manuscripts, and create finding aids.
  • Ability to work collaboratively while demonstrating initiative, resourcefulness, and commitment to providing excellent service.
  • Ability and willingness to represent the University through participation in Library professional organizations.
  • Ability to lift 20 lbs.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with WMS library management system.
  • Experience with LibGuides.
  • Some knowledge of or interest in the French language.

Responsibilities

  • Perform original and copy cataloging of monographs, serials, and media, ensuring adherence to Library of Congress standards for subject headings and authorities.
  • Catalog the French Institute's collections, including new acquisitions and existing holdings.
  • Organize and create finding aids for archival collections (manuscripts, artifacts, artwork, photographs, audio tapes) according to professional standards for special collections.
  • Create and maintain inventories of uncatalogued manuscript and print collections, such as theses, dissertations, parish histories, ephemera, and newsletters.
  • Rehome or dispose of deaccessioned books and serials.
  • Repair and preserve rare materials as needed.
  • Collaborate on digitization projects for print and archival holdings, including participation in a 5-university team for the Franco-American Digital Archives/Portail Franco-Américain.
  • Set up and operate digitizing workstations with newly acquired equipment.
  • Redesign and update the French Institute website, including sections for finding aids and digitized materials, using LibGuides software.
  • Classify, circulate, and maintain library materials.
  • Provide reference, bibliographical, and readers’ advisory services.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
