About The Position

The Learning Effectiveness Program (LEP) at the University of Denver is hiring LEP Tutors for the 2026-2027 academic year. Tutors are needed with strong backgrounds in college-level Business, Engineering/Computer Science, Humanities, Languages, Mathematics, Science, and Social Sciences, from entry-level to advanced. This role assists students in building confidence, independence, and academic skills in a one-on-one setting, and provides access to resources to help them achieve their academic goals. Tutoring is distinct from teaching. Hours are based on student requests during Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters, with potential for additional hours. Tutors are supervised by the LEP Tutoring Coordinator and assigned a Lead Tutor mentor. The LEP serves neurodiverse learners who require competent tutors to assist them in developing academic and non-academic skills for success at DU. New tutors must complete an online New Tutor Orientation and the first 5 hours of CRLA Certification training within their first quarter. The program participates in CRLA Level I and Level II Certification, requiring participation in training activities to maintain standards. These activities include orientation, working towards CRLA Level I Certification, attending supplemental trainings and tutor meetings, and completing at least 25 hours of tutoring to meet CRLA Level I requirements. Failure to attend meetings or complete tasks like maintaining records and assessments may result in removal from the role. Tutors must also attend one-on-one meetings with the Tutoring Coordinator. This is a non-benefited position not to exceed 1,000 hours in a calendar year.

Requirements

• At least 1 year of demonstrated experience in the subjects they want to tutor.
• Willingness to adapt tutoring behaviors based on best practices and LEP needs.
• Provide unofficial transcript to prove grades on courses they want to tutor or show equivalent professional experience.
• Must be located in Denver Metro area and be able to provide in-person availability.
• Complete online New Tutor Orientation training.
• Complete the first 5 hours of CRLA Certification on Canvas before the end of the quarter hired (or within 10-week timeframe).
• Complete AT LEAST 25 hours of tutoring during the academic year to meet CRLA Level I requirements.
• Ability to learn how to tutor students in a one-on-one environment.
• Ability to implement principles of Universal Design for Learning when working with neurodiverse learners.
• Ability to work with students who are experiencing anxiety and stress.
• Excellent time management skills.
• Excellent and proactive communication skills.
• Able to adapt tutoring behaviors based on best practices and LEP needs.

Responsibilities

• Effectively tutor in a one-on-one environment.
• Assist students in becoming self-sufficient, independent learners.
• Collaborate with LEP Specialists to meet the learning needs of students.
• Actively maintain and update availability and subjects on Accudemia (tutoring scheduling software).
• Complete Tutoring Assessments for all appointments within 48 hours.
• Update appointment information (changes, cancellations) within 24 hours.
• Help students clarify questions to understand why they were having trouble with material.
• Provide students with academic tips and tools for use after graduation.
• Help students think critically about course material.
• Help students explore new ways of learning.
• Help students develop a growth mindset.
• Help students stay accountable before and during tutoring appointments.
• Complete all Tutoring Assessments in a timely manner and clearly communicate session content and outcomes.
• Communicate consistently via phone, email, or in-person with the Tutoring Coordinator/Lead Tutor regarding any questions, comments, or concerns.
• Attend required trainings and tutor meetings throughout the academic year.
• Keep schedule updated and communicate with Tutoring Coordinator, students, and Lead Tutor regarding appointment cancellations.
• Perform additional tasks as needed and requested by the Tutoring Coordinator.
• Meet expectations of the LEP Department and Tutoring Coordinator.
• Complete initial tutor training by the end of the quarter hired (or within 10-week timeframe).
• Complete Initial Tutor Training on Canvas and load active schedule in Accudemia by WEEK 10 of the quarter hired (or within 10-week timeframe).
