About The Position

Earthjustice, the nation's leading environmental law organization, is seeking a part-time legal extern for its Biodiversity Defense Program for spring 2027. This externship is ideal for law students passionate about environmental justice and who are eligible to receive academic credit or fulfill a graduation requirement. The extern will work on research and litigation-related assignments, learn core lawyering skills, and develop strategic thinking abilities. The successful candidate may work remotely within the U.S. or on a hybrid schedule from Earthjustice’s Bozeman, Denver, New York, San Francisco, or Seattle office. The Biodiversity Defense Program focuses on confronting the biodiversity crisis through litigation concerning habitat destruction and the over-exploitation of wildlife, aiming to reshape our relationship with lands, water, and wildlife.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in law school as a 2L or 3L during spring 2027.
  • Must be eligible to receive academic credit or fulfill a graduation requirement through this externship.
  • Excellent writing, research, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with legal research tools, including Westlaw.
  • Strong work ethic, initiative, and ability to think creatively.
  • Ability to work collegially with others and independently.
  • Interest in public interest law and social justice.
  • Must commit to 12-22.5 hours/week.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of environmental and administrative law is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Work on research and litigation-related assignments spanning the team’s docket under the supervision of an attorney.
  • Potentially sit in on meetings with opposing counsel or clients.
  • Observe court proceedings.
  • Participate in legal strategy discussions.
