About The Position

Earthjustice is the nation's leading environmental law organization, dedicated to protecting people's health, preserving natural places, advancing clean energy, and combating climate change through the power of law and partnership. The Northeast Regional Office is accepting applications for two part-time legal externs for spring 2027. These externs will support the office's work in protecting public health, the climate, and the environment in the Northeast, focusing on a just transition to clean energy and advocating for communities disproportionately affected by environmental harms. The externship offers an opportunity to learn substantive environmental law and develop legal research and writing skills.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in a law school as a 2L or 3L during spring 2027.
  • Must be eligible to receive academic credit or fulfill a graduation requirement through this externship.
  • Excellent writing, research, analytical and organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with legal research tools, including Westlaw.
  • Strong work ethic, initiative, and ability to think creatively.
  • Ability to work collegially with others and independently.
  • Commitment to 10-20 hours/week for 12-16 weeks.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of environmental and administrative law.
  • Interest in public interest law and social justice.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct legal research to assist with cases under the supervision of a licensed attorney.
  • Participate in case team meetings.
  • Observe strategy meetings and decision-making.
