About The Position

eBay is seeking an experienced payments product lawyer to join its team. This role is crucial for eBay's evolution into a fintech platform, focusing on shaping the future of payments and financial services for one of the world's largest marketplaces. The ideal candidate will be a pragmatic product lawyer who can collaborate closely with Product and Engineering teams, understand complex legal and regulatory requirements, and translate them into thoughtful product solutions. This position offers a significant opportunity to advise on products from conception to launch and beyond, tackle novel issues at the intersection of technology, commerce, and financial services, and contribute to strategic decision-making.

Requirements

A J.D. from an accredited law school and an active license to practice law in at least one U.S. state.
10+ years of relevant legal experience, with significant experience providing payments counseling to fintechs, financial services, and/or technology companies.
Meaningful experience partnering directly with Product and Engineering teams and advising throughout the product lifecycle—from early design and development through launch and ongoing operation.
Deep knowledge of the payments ecosystem and the legal and regulatory frameworks that apply to payments products, particularly in the context of merchants, marketplaces, or technology platforms.
Familiarity with money transmission, electronic funds transfers and consumer protection, card network rules, bank payments, financial crime and sanctions requirements, and other laws, regulations, and industry rules relevant to payments.
The ability and curiosity to understand product requirements, user journeys, technical systems and funds flows, and translate legal requirements into practical product guidance.
Excellent judgment and the ability to navigate novel legal questions where the law, technology, or business model may be evolving and there isn't always a perfect precedent or obvious answer.
A practical, solutions-oriented mindset.
The ability to communicate complicated legal concepts plainly and give clear advice that Product, Engineering, and business teams can actually use.
The ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities, and operate with autonomy.

Responsibilities

Serve as a trusted legal co-pilot to Payments Product and Engineering teams, providing guidance from ideation through launch and beyond.
Partner closely with Product, Engineering, Risk, Compliance, and Operations teams to understand product requirements, user experiences, funds flows, and technical architecture.
Navigate the evolving legal and regulatory landscape for payments and financial services, translating complex requirements into clear, actionable guidance.
Work collaboratively with teams to develop practical solutions that enable innovation while managing risk responsibly.
Advise on new payments products, features, and experiences from concept through launch, identifying issues early and helping teams make informed tradeoffs.
Develop a deep understanding of the payments ecosystem, including payment processing, acquiring, card networks, payouts, stored value, wallets, and emerging payment methods.
Help build smarter ways of working by developing practical frameworks, playbooks, and product review processes.
Act as a go-to problem-solver, comfortable with ambiguity and focused on finding responsible paths forward.
Collaborate with colleagues across various departments (Product, Engineering, Compliance, Risk, Privacy, Operations, Legal) and global teams.
