About The Position

407 ETR is currently seeking a Legal Counsel to add to our team. This role will be critical in building a legal compliance framework, strengthening our advisory services, and providing important contracts support, all to ensure 407 ETR operates in accordance with regulatory requirements, its governing documents, and industry best practices. The Legal Counsel will also be expected to promote a client‑focused, continuous improvement culture within the Legal Department.

Requirements

  • Law degree (Canadian LLB/JD and Ontario Call).
  • 4-5 years of relevant legal experience (min 2+ years at a national law firm and 2+ years in-house).
  • Demonstrable experience in developing and maintaining legal compliance programs.
  • Demonstrable experience in providing legal advice across a range of corporate-commercial topics.
  • Demonstrable experience in commercial contracting.
  • Proficient in Office 365, Co-Pilot, Adobe Professional, and other software required to be productive in your role.

Nice To Haves

  • IAPP or equivalent privacy certifications (CIPP/C, CIPP/US, CIPP/E, CIPM) considered an asset.
  • Transportation, infrastructure, construction and/or real estate experience considered assets.
  • Concise, plain-language communicator with strong analytical and interpretive skills.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a legal compliance framework reflecting 407 ETR’s governing instruments, public company obligations, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Build legal compliance controls and monitoring processes as part of 407 ETR’s enterprise risk management (ERM) framework.
  • Maintain policies and procedures relevant to 407 ETR’s Board of Directors.
  • Support compliance-related training and awareness initiatives.
  • Conduct compliance risk assessments or audits, as needed.
  • Provide legal advisory services to ensure business initiatives are carried out in a compliant and reputationally-sound manner.
  • Respond to legal inquiries as they may relate to laws and regulations impacting 407 ETR, including those related to privacy, consumer protection, intellectual property and the Highway 407 Act.
  • Support incident response activities and exercises e.g., data security, business continuity etc.
  • Contribute and participate in ongoing improvements to the contracts management program.
  • Review, draft and negotiate contracts for goods and services, including those related to IT/SaaS, consulting services, sponsorships/partnerships, marketing and promotions, and highway maintenance, and technology.
  • Support contract template development and bespoke agreements.
  • Embody the Department’s ‘can-do, client-oriented’ service culture.
  • Respond to various requests that support 407 ETR’s legal objectives.
  • Apply a continuous improvement mindset to increase efficiency and value-add in your area of responsibility, such as leveraging authorized AI tools and technology.
  • Develop positive working relationships within the Department and across client groups by engaging peers, collaborating on tasks, and effectively managing expectations.
  • Take opportunities to mentor others within the Department on legal matters.
