About The Position

This position is a Legal Assistant III with the Litigation Department in the Legal Services Division (LSD) of the HHS Office of Chief Counsel (OCC). The Litigation Department is responsible for providing legal advice and support for pending or threatened litigation against HHS or HHS employees in their official or individual capacities. The Department serves as the primary point of contact with the Office of the Attorney General to defend lawsuits and administrative actions filed against HHSC or DSHS concerning employment decisions, tort claims, agency rules and policies, alleged constitutional deprivations, contract and procurement disputes, federal and state statutes, including the Medicaid Act, and to prosecute cases of Medicaid fraud. The Legal Assistant III performs advanced (senior-level) legal assistant work under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Requirements

  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively, verbally and in writing, regarding legal matters.
  • Knowledge of legal terminology; state and federal laws, rules, and regulations; research methods and techniques; administrative and court procedures; the legislative process; and public notice requirements.
  • Ability to conduct research; to draft, prepare, and interpret legal documents; to evaluate and relate findings to cases in question; to conduct investigations.
  • Ability to assemble and prepare evidence, exhibits, affidavits, and documents for use in legal proceedings.
  • Ability to schedule and prioritize attorney caseloads; organize case files; attend initial interviews and depositions; conduct investigations; and prepare chronologies, fact summaries, and witness files.
  • Ability to schedule and draft interrogatories and requests for production, admissions, and information.
  • Ability to review and redact confidential documents for filing with various courts.
  • Ability to prepare synopses, abstracts, or summaries of complex legal issues.
  • Ability to prepare attorneys for meetings with complainants, witnesses, and expert witnesses.
  • Ability to draft and respond to correspondence and opinion requests involving legal interpretations and decisions.
  • Skill in understanding, processing and summarizing information; strong organizational skills; acute attention to detail; proficient in the use of office equipment, use of a computer and applicable software.
