About The Position

The Legal Assistant 1 at the Department of Human Services, Bureau of Hearings and Appeals, ensures appeal files are complete, accurate, and processed correctly. This position offers the chance to work with legal documents, scheduling, and communication that keeps the appeals system running smoothly. This role focuses on reviewing appeals, preparing legal documents, and managing case information to support administrative law judges and legal staff. It ensures that appeals are processed correctly, records are maintained, and communication is handled with care and professionalism.

Requirements

  • Three years of responsible clerical, enforcement or investigative work; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Meet the PA residency requirement.
  • Be able to perform essential job functions.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze appeals for procedural compliance and make recommendations based on regulations
  • Compute and adjust due dates while monitoring deadlines to ensure timely case processing
  • Coordinate hearings, notify involved parties, and produce scheduling letters through case management systems
  • Arrange subpoenas, orders, and other legal documents for judge review and signature
  • Organize electronic and physical records to ensure accuracy and proper labeling
  • Handle legal correspondence, update databases, and file materials in the correct appeal records
