About The Position

Gusto is seeking a Legal AI Engineer for a fixed-term engagement to build foundational AI infrastructure for their legal team. The role involves designing, implementing, and documenting AI systems that will be maintained internally by the team. The engineer will work with existing AI tooling built on Claude, integrating them into shared, maintainable assets and ensuring data flows efficiently. This position requires a hybrid legal and technical skillset to translate legal work into scalable systems and make them a reality. The goal is to turn promising experiments into robust, shared systems and deliver a coherent stack of tools and workflows that are fast, measurable, and safe.

Requirements

Hands-on experience building and deploying AI-assisted workflows, from prompt to production.
Direct, working proficiency with Claude or comparable LLMs, including prompt engineering, agentic workflows, and iterating on outputs for reliability.
Integration experience using APIs, MCPs, or similar patterns, with an understanding of potential issues.
Ability to coordinate with engineering or IT teams to scope and execute technical connections.
Comfort operating in ambiguity, translating business problems and context from legal professionals into working systems.
Skill in asking the right questions, filling in gaps with judgment, and moving projects forward.
Familiarity with internal technology governance processes, including communication with IT or AI teams regarding tool approvals, data access, and security reviews.
Ability to build within established guardrails and help the team understand their importance.

Nice To Haves

Experience working alongside attorneys, understanding contracting workflows, matter intake, research cycles, and legal decision-making processes.

Responsibilities

Package existing AI skills, workflows, and dashboards built in Claude into shared, maintainable assets for the team.
Integrate current AI tooling, building MCP integrations for seamless data flow and collaborating with Gusto's AIT team for necessary connections.
Further operationalize AI tools and integrations as agreed upon.
Establish a structured, queryable knowledge layer for the legal team, fed by existing research, positions, precedents, and playbooks, which can be searched by team members and invoked by automated workflows.
Implement AI-assisted workflows for high-volume legal use cases, such as contract review, matter intake and routing, and subpoena response drafting.
Develop prompt libraries for recurring legal tasks.
Create a maintenance runbook for all systems built and train designated team members on administration.
Establish adoption baselines for measuring progress and identifying areas for iteration.
